The story I heard was that Elvis was asked not to play radio radio and Lorne Michaels was furious. Decades later on SNL The Beasrie Boys were playing Sabatage and seconds in Elvis appeared on stage and interrupted, saying g the same thing he said in 1977, then they broke into Radio Radio.

I find it hilarious that Elvis Costello was banned from SNL for years due to one of the best musical performances in the history of Saturday Night Live.

Iconic. Elvis might be the most underrated and underappreciated artist in the history of rock 'n roll. And what a kickass performance of a genuine classic. Nobody makes music like this anymore.

Obviously far too sophisticated a musician and songwriter to be labelled punk, but he came up at the same time, and he sure adopted the asttitude. Get pissed. Destroy.

Dumbest thing ever to be banned for this. He switched songs after like 10 seconds. This didn't mess up the live schedule, and they played great, and they played a recognizable hit. Who was "harmed" by this? He gave a great performance. He did his job.

This legendary performance was a fluke. It was supposed to be the Sex Pistols as the musical guest but they couldn't get visas and were stuck in the UK. Pete Thomas (drummer) was wearing a t -shirt that said "Thanks Malc" for Malcolm McClaren, manager of the Sex Pistols.

Elvis and the Attractions weren't even supposed 1st backup choice after the Sex Pistols weren't able to make it. The Ramones were asked to come on and they turned it down. Joey Ramone later wrote that "We don't substitute for anybody".

This performance was contrived. Does anyone seriously believe he spontaneously decided to change songs after 30 seconds? EC spent his early career desperately trying to be the Sex Pistols. But there was only one John Lydon.
@clipcoug1139

EC got the idea to change songs from Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix was on a BBC Show (The Lulu Show) and they asked him to perform "Hey Joe". He stopped halfway through the song and told the audience "I'm going to stop playing this rubbish", then went into a rendition of CREAM's "Sunshine of Your Love" until he got pulled from the air. CREAM broke up recently before the show.

The wokeness was strong with Lorne back then. Wanted Costello to play an anti-fascist song rather than an anti-consumerism one. What an effing tool.

Lorne told them to play "Less than Zero" and Costello went off script and threw everything in turmoil (since it was a live show) by playing "Radio Radio". Also the songs lyrics were about criticizing the commercialization of broadcasting. The corporate brass at NBC (which owned radio properties) objected to the lyrics, but I think the main problem was not the lyrics, but the fact that the band going off script and that pissed off Lorne.. For everyone fooled by this, Lorne and Costello PLANNED this. Lorne got exactly what he wanted, front line news, with plausible deniability. See Letterman Andy Koffman, Madonna, Drew Barrymore. He did it a bunch of times. I'm not a fan of Lorne, but this was brilliant.
