I've always wondered if it's possible to have timber buildings. Will they be strong enough? What is the limit to their height? Will they be cost-effective? I am so glad to have watched this video! It answers my questions and more. Thank you to Architect Waugh. I really learned a great deal from him especially on the innovations of timber construction! And your questions have brought out insights from him that needed answers. Thank you so much!

Key insights 🌿 Biophilic design in schools can inspire creativity and learning, drawing inspiration from nature for beautiful and functional spaces. 🌿 Biophilic design incorporates ecological planning and planning for mental wellbeing, creating a balance that is important for human health. 🌿 Biophilic design in schools promotes environmental stewardship and can act as community hubs, advocating for climate-responsive behavior and mental well-being. 📚 Natural environments have physiological responses that increase relaxation levels and motivation to learn, making them beneficial for students. 🌿 Biophilic design can transform schools by incorporating high-quality green space into the school footprint. 🌿 The design incorporates a high-tech solution that recycles water for toilet flushing and irrigation, blending technology with nature. 🍂 The focus on late spring, early summer, and autumn, as well as the use of grasses and trees, ensures beauty and engagement even during the winter season. 🌿 The impact of biophilic design on students and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive, with increased pride, inspiration, and opportunities for both. 🌳 The satisfaction of seeing a small play area grow and mature into a beautiful landscape is immensely rewarding. TLDR: Biophilic design in schools can have a positive impact on students and teachers, promoting creativity, learning, and environmental stewardship. 1. 00:00 🌿 Natural Dimensions focuses on integrating natural systems and patterns of nature into their designs, including outdoor spaces, urban design master plans, and landscape strategies. 1.1 The Journal of Biophilic Design's issue five is out, featuring inspiration from nature in various forms, including art, urban design, and workspaces. 1.2 Nick Aon, founder of Natural Dimensions, discusses the design of a biophilic school and the integration of natural systems and built elements in outdoor spaces. 1.3 The company focuses on incorporating natural systems and patterns of nature into their designs, including outdoor spaces, urban design master plans, and landscape strategies. 2. 03:21 🌿 Biophilic design in schools promotes biodiversity, mental well-being, and community engagement, leading to improved concentration and motivation to learn in natural settings. 2.1 Growing up in a family that encouraged exploration of the outdoors, the speaker developed a sensitivity towards the environment, which was further enhanced by studying English literature and psychology. 2.2 Biophilic design incorporates ecological planning and mental wellbeing principles into design, creating good quality design that is important for wellbeing and climate issues. 2.3 Biophilic design in schools is important for promoting biodiversity, climate responsiveness, mental well-being, and environmental stewardship, and can also serve as community hubs. 2.4 Kids are more engaged and focused in schools with strong green environments, as evidenced by research showing improved concentration and motivation to learn in natural settings. 2.5 There is a lot of evidence supporting the implementation of biophilic design in schools, including the creation of community spaces for parents and guardians to congregate. 3. 09:39 🌿 Schools should incorporate nature-inspired design and activities to encourage children to engage with the living world, promoting climate resilience and positive childhood experiences. 3.1 Nature inspired design and climate resilience are often rooted in childhood experiences of being close to nature, which can activate and encourage individuals to pursue these initiatives. 3.2 Nature can be fascinating for kids, and schools should provide opportunities for engagement with the living world through activities like growing and cooking produce. 3.3 The school is located in an old part of Meren, an urban extension facing out into the green belt, with certain issues of social deprivation and health. 4. 12:25 🌿 Integrating biophilic design into school footprints, creating a soothing environment with high-quality green space and a memorial garden with engraved values. 4.1 The school was designated for renewal and the design was to integrate the school into the environment, with a focus on biophilic principles and low carbon technology. 4.2 The speaker discusses incorporating biophilic design into school footprints, developing the design through presentations, and creating high-quality green space. 4.3 The design creates a transition from the hard street to a softer, soothing environment, with an embrace of nature at the entrance and a soothing effect as you walk towards the plaza and into the school. 4.4 The school incorporated a memorial garden with glass panels engraved with the values of the deceased headmaster, serving as a message to arriving and departing individuals. 5. 17:07 🌿 The school was transformed with biophilic design, incorporating woodland, naturalistic planting, and a high-tech water recycling system to create a nature-inspired environment. 5.1 The design aimed to create a sequence of habitats around the school, incorporating woodland and filtering views to give the feeling that the school is within nature. 5.2 The school was designed with naturalistic planting, trees for shade and solar gain, and a courtyard that reflects the surrounding landscape. 5.3 The design of the courtyard incorporates biophilic elements, with permeable paving, rain gardens, and a high-tech water recycling system. 6. 21:01 🌿 Biophilic design in schools incorporates diverse plants, water elements, and seasonal changes to stimulate and excite students, and can be implemented in any building to reduce heat and encourage sustainability. 6.1 The school's biophilic design incorporates a diverse range of flowering plants that bloom at different stages throughout the seasons, with a particular focus on late spring, early summer, September, and October, as well as utilizing grasses and trees to provide structure and beauty during the winter season. 6.2 Biophilic design in schools incorporates elements like water, curving lines, and seasonal changes to stimulate and excite students, encouraging them to have a positive and adventurous reaction. 6.3 Biophilic design can be implemented in any building, including schools, by incorporating elements such as deciduous trees, water capture, and planting crates to reduce heat and encourage sustainability. 7. 24:22 🌿 Biophilic design in schools has positively impacted students and teachers, inspiring lessons and creating a better learning environment, while landscape architects play a unique role in improving ecological footprints in new housing. 7.1 Children and teachers are excited about the biophilic design in schools, with positive feedback and anticipation for the new environment. 7.2 Biophilic design in schools has had a positive impact on students and teachers, inspiring lessons and creating a better learning environment. 7.3 Improving and creating a positive ecological footprint in new housing is important, and landscape architects are in a unique position to offer that service to clients. 8. 27:36 🌿 Integrating biophilic design into schools is vital for connecting with nature, promoting education and awareness, and creating a more sustainable and fulfilling environment for students. 8.1 We need to integrate development with natural systems and functions, work with people who want to do good things, and combat fear to ensure that our actions are in tune with the way the planet functions. 8.2 Education and awareness are vital in the construction industry to ensure proper scrutiny and integration of landscape elements in development projects. 8.3 We all have a natural fascination with nature, regardless of age or profession, and it can be rewarding to incorporate biophilic design into schools. 8.4 Designing and maintaining natural landscapes in schools is challenging, but the rewards of seeing the habitat mature and the kids enjoying the environment are immensely satisfying and spiritually fulfilling. 8.5 Nick loves his job and believes that the benefits of biophilic design outweigh the drawbacks, envisioning a world with more complexity and diversity in planting schemes. 8.6 Incorporating nature into design to become part of the natural system and evolution.

Not only an absolutely interesting topic but a down-to-earth person who is pleasant to listen to. Sooner or later studies will come out that not only does biophilic desing benefit health, but biophilic designers do too! Living walls are a thorny topic and as a designer and consultant in biophilic design it is really tricky to come up with these kinds of solutions, especially because of their cost and maintenance. However, I am sure that as time goes on there will be more and more inexpensive solutions with more and more automated maintenance.
