Thank you for an excellent & informative review of FORGE. Very interesting… 🤔 From what you were saying, I wasn’t quite sure whether there is a “smaller” & “larger” version of the book… & if so, whether the amount of content varies, or just the size of the book. You also pointed out how small the text is in the version that you were reviewing & that would **definitely** be an issue for me as my eyesight isn’t what it used to be & - even with reading glasses - such a small point size font would probably be too much of a struggle, so I’m hoping that there’s a “larger” book that’s also printed with larger text. Do you know if that’s the case? Many Thanks. 🙏
@ARKavli5 ай бұрын
There are larger and smaller print versions. Geek Gamers did a review and shows the two: the larger sized has a much larger font. Here's a link to her review where you see both books. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZqTqpmvn5WLn8U

Just found Forge and your solo play. Very cool. I find it interesting how I was coming up with a completely different setup here as I thought of roll results. In my thought experiment the Elementalist focused on lightning and the garden was an herb garden. You mentioned necromancy, so my mind jumped to a Dr Frankenstein vibe. Using herbs injected I to the dead and zapping them by calling lightning. Very cool, thanks for doing this.

what I could see doing with this system: you use it to generate your own adventure, NPCs, and world; then you could actually run that adventure for a group later (with some alterations of course)

I ran an Ironsworn game and started doing some rolls before hand because sometimes the players would ask reasonable questions that I couldn't answer because I hadn't randomly determined it yet. Like what kind of tracks are in front of the cave kind of thing. I've occasionally considered using oracles to make an adventure then write it up and sell it. :)

By the way I like the idea to introduce a level of difficulty for each hex beyond weapon range. Pistols with range 4 are not exactly realistic to begin with, but exploding enemies have range 6. How does that go together. Your idea kind fixes that and I will use it for sure.

One thing I do on the d66 tables is that if the original roll doesn't quite make sense I'll reverse it and check that result to see if it's any more narratively connected. So on a roll of 25 when you got a DEER result, I'd look at roll 52 and see what that is. In this case, the roll of 52 would have resulted in SCORPION, which may or may not be a better result.

Im confused by the rules for Known Threats. The book says that those only appear as a result of an Activity Check, which happens when the time track resets. Ok. However the rules for determining area connector types include a 20% chance of generating an ambush for hallways. Are those Known Threats too? I think they must be as they are ambushes and ambushes are only ever Known Threats, right?
@ARKavli7 ай бұрын
My understanding is that ambush refers to a surprise result as generated at the beginning of a combat, which grants a +2 initiative. Known Threat encounters are always ambushes, but I don't read it as they are the only ones that can set an ambush / surprise (+2 init). So for the connector 20% ambush, I read that as a normal encounter where the critter gets +2 Init. I chalked it up to loose use of technical game terms where ambush and surprise are the same (both +2 Init), but I might be wrong.

This is a perfect all-in-one ruleset for a solo-RPGists. You mentioned the relationship to genrediversion so I was curious and had a look at that too. Couldn't find much on YT. What a pity. GD are great RPG rules and I am surprised that they are mostly unknown to the RPG society. I would love to see a review on genrediversion from PIG games. Thank you for your content. Can I ask would you rather tell a solo player who likes alot of depth to pick up this and the setting book or the Hostile Rules and core setting and add your own stuff in for soloving problems? Also how well do the other supplements work into the the Hostile Solo? Thanks again :-)
@ARKavli7 ай бұрын
I would suggest all three. :) I've done two play through series on my channel, and the solo book really has all you need, but I prefer to play with a bit more detail myself, so incorporated the Hostile rulebook, as well. I prefer to play through scenes instead of playing the scene back as Hostile Solo recommends, but the solo book is designed so well for the setting, and has great tables and personality conflict rules, that I'd definitely suggest it.

I am confused about one thing with the encounters section of the book. The part right after it talks about the Guardians and how they can be hacked, on page 291. There are 4 Guardians named Titan, Anasi, Arash, and Brahmari. When am I supposed to use these? I was thinking that its supposed to be that those 4 guardians are the only ones because humans have catalogued them all. But guardians are one of the available types when generating your own creature for an encounter.
@ARKavli7 ай бұрын
Page 268 has the table for determining the creature type. If you roll guardian, you don't generate it like other critters. You simply jump to the guardians, determine which one is encountered (d4?), and use the appropriate stat block based on the difficulty of the encounter. Hacking rules are on page 102, with modifiers on page 290.
