While fishing for dinner one day A boy caught a big letter A He then caught a B, a C, D, and E And an F, G, H, I, J and K Unhappy, the boy sat and thought "I can't eat all these letters I've caught. I must catch some fish to fill up my dish, or my whole afternoon is for not." But as soon as his hook hits the sea He caught L, M, N, O, and P And Q, R, S, T And a U and a V And a W, X, Y, and Z Now hungry, he stared at the group Then suddenly, grabbing a scoop He had a bright notion And cooked up a potion And feasted on alphabet soup

I always wanted to be in a marching band when I was little, but I had to wait until I was in high school. I am in my high school marching band, and us band members are all taller than those kids in the video.

Between this amazing tune, which has been in me head for 45 years, and the similar beautiful "Lower Case n" I wish that there was an entire album of alphabet story songs, all with deep thought provoking lyrics and haunting melodies.

We all live in a capitalist Iie In the middle of the desert In the center of the sky. All day long we polish up the Iie To make it clean and shiny So it brightens up the sky. Rubbing it here And scrubbing it there. Polishing the lie So high in the air. And as we work we sing a lively tune "It is great to be so happy on a busy afternoon." And when we're through with the day's only chore, We go into the Iie And we close the door.

It's downright amazing to me, how sweeping the kitchen floor brings this song to me. Thirty years ago, I wouldn't have given it another thought, but here in the Future, you just go to a computer and ask it about the Sesame Street Capital I song, and there it is. So I sit and watch the screen, and let the memory wash over me. When I first heard the song as a boy, it was just an interesting song about three guys cleaning an I, singing, and then going inside. That was it. I had little to no appreciation for music or poetry as a child. Now, I devote fascinated thought to a giant capital I hovering in the sky above a desert. The minor chord at "middle of the desert" tells me there's more to the music than I recall. Thank you to the poster, and thank you to Steve Zuckerman for this absolutely stirring song, and imagery that is at the same time simple and deep. This is a perfect example of why Sesame Street had such a positive effect on me and millions of other children. In a very indirect, intangible way, it has given civilization something it may not have had any other way.

This is actually a very deep and profound statement about the individualistic hyper capitalist culture of our USA and how we focus too much on our own egos. It's good to take care of your capital I, but we should try and take care of eachother and our enviroment too.

Many seem to be wondering what this is all about. Well, it could be about the self (i.e., the "I"). The path to emotional and psychological health is to cultivate and nurture and take care of the self every day. When and if you do, you go to bed each night content.

When I was a kid this particular segment used to give me the willies and I was never sure why. As an adult I can recognize the "people" as being some kind of religious ascetics, like Simeon Stylites, and the "I" is the pillar on (in) which they live a very meditative and spiritual existence, far away (in the middle of the desert, in the center of the sky) from the real world of turmoil and strife. The polishing of the I represents both their simple labors and their quest for inner knowledge (which is why the letter is an "I"). But all that was too much for a little boy of 5 to wrap my mind around.
