@@deepspace8 yes, but Michael had changed her name before then, back when she was with the Runaways, maybe even before that. If I remember correctly, she changed it so that when her name first started appearing on a concert flyer or poster, you couldn't tell that she was female.

Cheers. I have to say, I'm glad Brahms only composed four symphonies. They're great but a real b---- to analyze. 🤣
@NN-df7hl2 күн бұрын
Much appreciated! :) When I first heard the work the appearance of Theme 2 in the Cadence of Mvt 1 completely tripped me up. I wonder why Brahms did that. It helps segue to the soft-sounding start of the Development? Although the Cadence already ends pretty softly. BTW, the repeat seems unnecessary, imho. Or did Brahms consider it sacrosanct?
@Nyssa337Күн бұрын
Exposition repeats were starting to become more optional around this time for two reasons, longer length and linear narrative. There has always been debate over exposition repeats in symphonies like Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique, Beethoven's 6th and 7th, Dvorak's 6th, and of course Brahms. I've heard recordings both ways, and generally I like exposition repeats only in first movements and only when the exposition is under three minutes in length. That's just me though. In the classical period it made sense to repeat because the point of an exposition repeat at that time was to provide an appropriate balance of harmonically stable music vs harmonically unstable music and also to adhere to the rounded binary form origins of sonata form. As music became longer and more focused on expressive content rather than formal structure, exposition repeats weren't really needed. A good example is Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique - movement 4. Taking the exposition repeat essentially means you hear the execution procession approach from the distance twice as if they marched to the scaffold and then were teleported far away and had to approach again (which makes no narrative sense). Anyway, didn't mean to write a book here, but there it is. For what its worth, I love Mackerras' recording so much but don't like the repeat so I just used editing software to take it out. Doing that on the 1st symphony means both can fit on the same CD for my car trips. 🙂 First world problems...

Your analyses were fundamentally what got me into classical music. I found your analysis of Mozarts Oboe Concerto and suddenly that door opened to me... I thought: this makes sense! It has a structure! Melodies, transformations and all that specific craft of the medium. Then I went my own way but never stopped coming back to your channel, because your analysis are always so insightful I can access more layers of meaning. Aside from this, what a wonderful piece this symphony is. Keep up the great work

🤣No, I don't feel any pressure to get the walkthroughs out fast. I do them when I'm in the mood and I'd rather get them right as opposed to quickly, which I think everyone understands and appreciates. Haven't worked on Mendelssohn 3 or Brahms PC1 yet, BUT you'll be happy to know I'm almost finished with Brahms Symphony 1 and hope to have that up by next weekend. Analyzing Brahms is a VERY SLOW process because there is SO MUCH motivic transformation and harmonic turnover. Don't get me wrong, I love Brahms, but right now I'm glad he only did four symphonies. 🤣

The definitive recording of this suite.......as a one-time French hornist, their fanfare at the beginning of the last section is chillingly awe inspiring. If only I could have ever sounded like that!

I feel that many classical music fans seem to adore Shostakovich on a more personal level than other composers because he looks like such a dear and precious person - very boyish even when middle-aged, very shy even when a celebrity. He was a gentle soul who should have lived all his life like a whimsical Beatrix Potter character and never experienced anything bad.
