I live in Alberta. We do have tax but it's at 5% GST compared to other provinces sometimes getting up to 12% GST+HST. Having health coverage is nice, but you don't have as many protections if you get hurt at work. I have a friend in Texas where I told him that I was in a workplace incident and they're denying part of my injury on the claim... His response? Well, sue them then! Unfortunately, at least in Alberta, by participating in the Workers compensation program, you forfeit your right to sue. But you're legally obligated to participate at the same time...
