Id bring a can of pepper spray even though its illegal, the offender is hardly going to complain you to the old bill. Pepper spray and a good torch. 170,000 people are reported missing in the UK each year, and in the USA its 600,000, approximately 4,400 unidentified bodies are recovered annually. Id also carry knife without doubt and if i get attacked at 3am ill go to prison i dont care. Theres a lot of weirdos that think nothing for killing you, and if your in the wrong place at the wrong time having a weapon increases your chances of survival. Anyway i think id be too scared to go alone, id prefer to go with a mate id feel a lot safer and relaxed

Thing is, my understanding is pepper spray is classed as a firearm in the UK. That's a minimum 6 months prison and maximum 10 years and there is no way you can pass it off as anything but a defensive (therefore offensive weapon). It carries a significant risk.

I got a knock-off (but good quality) woobi. I then picked up an XL Snugpac Jungle blanket. I use it in the caravan - it packs down smaller than the woobi, is slightly lighter and the dogs lay on it all the time. Hardly ever been cold with it - although the two furry hot water bottles may have helped there!!. If I need to make attachment points I use those little tarp clips on the Jungle blanket. Woobi now is used mostly in my hammock and - like you said- a useful car blanket for the dogs! Good pieces of kit and worth getting a few different sizes. Good video and hope you feel much better soon.

Another great episode, I hope you recover soon and can then get out and about. Having recently acquired one to fit in my poncho as intended, I was a little surprised after tying it in all the way round,that it then can't be used due to the fact there isn't a hole provided to pop it over your head! I'm sure the addition of some velcro or a zip could get round this, but I wonder how head of procurements hasn't already taken care of it, because there must be a lot of pissed off squaddies out there with something to say about it, or is it just me?

Yank veteran here... It's called a "poncho liner" because it's meant to be used with the poncho as a form of Sleep System... a relatively "waterproof" blanket, as a sleeping bag (look up "Ranger Roll"), or even two (with the liners tied to its inside of the poncho) ponchos snapped together as "A" frame shelter in cold climates when you also have the fancy, multi bag, sleeping bags. Some civilians have modified the poncho liners so there is a "hole" for the head. In the military its presumed that one is already wearing apparel suitable for the temperature. The poncho as outer wear to keep dry in precipitation/snow.
@dogdadoutdoors
@dogdadoutdoors 6 күн бұрын
Yes, @baronedpiemonte3990 answered it perfectly. If you wanted something you could wear under a poncho but use as blanket or sleeping bag too, have you see the Swagman roll from Helikon Tex. Not cheap and cheerful like this, but seems like a well thought out product.

Dad, i have had one for years genuine articl. They are not perfect, but do what they say and very versatile can be used for nmany things. Issued to most nato forces includjng uk and usa. There are three parts to it, the poncho being the key. Poncho, then iner blanket od woobie goes inside, this is quite thin.. The third item is the outer blanked which is much thicker more like a quilt for colder conditions. I use the inner blanket on my bed in summer as its hot, stops you sweating so much if hot.

You can't legally carry a knife in the UK for defensive purposes, its classed as an offensive weapon, can land you with 4 years in prison and an unlimited fine. You have to remember if somebody attacks you and you pull out a knife, use it or not, even if you 'survive' unless your response is deemed reasonable your life is pretty much owner. Your are going to prison, will lose your job, your wife will likely meet a new 'friend' and you'll be in danger every day in prison trying not to pick the soap up. Then at the end you will have to rebuild your life with a criminal record. You would be much better off just giving them your stuff.

Always adopt don’t shop anything else is unethical and irresponsible when there are so many in need of homes.
@dogdadoutdoors
@dogdadoutdoors 7 күн бұрын
I think it's a little more nuanced than that and nobody should be shamed into getting a dog they can't 100% commit to. You have to get the dog that is right for you, otherwise that dog has a bigger risk of going back into a rescue centre. A dog is a huge commitment and you need to be able to 100% sure with your choice. For example I got my rescue Nova at 4 months. Everybody, including the vet thought she would be around 20-25kg. 3 years later and she is 45kg, pretty much twice the size I thought I was getting. We didn't want a big dog, thats one of the reasons we didn't get a husky and she is way bigger than one of those. But, she is so sweet I wouldn't change her for the world but many people don't have the space, cant handle a big dog like that or have the funds to pay for a big dog as they do work out a lot more expensive for almost everything. When you get a rescue puppy you don't know what you are getting. You also have to think about things like Brucella, which rescue dogs from Romania and other countries can have and if they have it, in the UK you not only have to put that dog down, but all of the other dogs in your household too and so there are ethics in risking your existing dogs to rescue another too. I get the sentiment behind always adopt don't shop but like a lot of things the reality of life is a lot more complex. My message would be a lot more liberal and say 'start with the rescues' and spend a fair amount of time looking for the right dog, but if the right dog doesn't come up, don't risk their chances of finding their forever home. Get the dog that is right for you.

Hi, I didn't know if you could help me. I'm currently staying in an old gatehouse holiday cottage with my family and I have my own room sort of a bit separate as it's at the bottom of the hall and was build hundreds of years before the rest of the bedrooms. Every night at around the same time (approx 1:30am), I hear this sound outside my window that sounds just like super slow footsteps on rough rocks and it really freaks me out as outside my window is completely overgrown and not get able to buy humans (I would think). I've tried to imagine it being a deer but it sounds too human like. Do you know of any other animals it could be? I live in the UK and can't find anything about it and it would be nice to have some clarification that it was just an animal and not a human or something as it makes me freeze out of fear every footstep I hear. Thanks

where about are you staying? some places have wild ponies like Dartmoor or the New forest and they could easily create heavy footsteps and slow footsteps as they slowly graze. If you are near a farm it could even be cows. If in doubt shine a torch out, if its a human up to not good they will likely scarper.

A question that's so often on my mind. I'm not very experienced, and I've often had a horrible time, wondering what on earth I was doing it for. I realised recently a large part of it for me is the challenge. Not everything has to be comfortable, and we can enjoy difficulty and stress and even pain. It's also about recapturing some childhood freedoms, when I used to cycle all day, get lost, then find my way home - I prefer to cycle camp now with panniers, as it's better for my neck and shoulders than carrying a pack. I love the woods, but also where I am it's not far from higher land with moors and mountains, where the views are very different, and the challenges different too. And solitude - I've wild camped with a family member a couple of times, but I prefer to be alone. It is surprisingly character-building, trying to sleep in a tent on your own on a moor with the wind howling and the rain lashing down, and just having to rely on yourself. But I am there for the camping itself, just not managed camping. Great content as ever, Brian!

Thanks for sharing. Glad you're ok, and hope you're fully recovered. I generally go alone on my camping trips, and I wanted to make it as safe as I could (within reason) and looked into trackers, but decided against, since the ones that don't just use a phone signal were expensive, and if you've got a phone signal that's probably good enough. However, I realise I have to watch that I've got signal as I'm traveling, and look after the battery power in case of emergency. It could break, of course, but so could most things. I have an option on my phone for emergency location sending, and all I have to do is press the power button three times in quick succession to send my location to my partner. That would be worst case scenario where I can't manage to use the phone normally and call or text, just a very simple method. It switches on the GPS and data if they're not on, and will even take photos automatically and record a few seconds of audio to send. I leave her with my intended location usually as well, especially if the signal is dodgy there, or I'll phone to say where I am along the route. This made me wonder about the option of camping (if you were even more remote, I mean) - it could help just to sit, eat, drink, light a fire, get comfy and sleep if you've got the kit for it with you. Against that, you risk things getting worse and it being even harder to get out. I soon discovered on my trips how easy it is to get past myself, too much exercise, not enough food and drink, getting too focused on all the details you do have to think of, but just not stopping to rest enough. I'm 63, and still falling off my mountain bike on muddy trails in the woods...but, you know, 'adventure before dementia'!

Getting a little bit past yourself isn't a bad thing, the only way to expand the envelope is to push at the boundaries and try to stretch them. The trackers I use for the dogs are pretty good. It works on phone over a distance, but it will take any carrier and then there is bluetooth up to 100m and once close in you can also remotely turn on an alarm and a flashing light. Works out about £3.60 a month so pretty reasonable too.

Expensive ,controlled, homelessness, where you can live like a tramp with all the things they wish they had ,knowing you have somewhere to go if it all goes wrong ,plus being in nature is the best feeling in the world. Away from everyday life and people .Great content, brother. God bless you and your family, and happy camping 🏕 😀 😊 🙏. Lee

Perhaps you might mention wild camping is illegal unless you have land owners permission first.... And finding who owns the land will be a challenge itself. Unfortunately you may end up on the wrong side of land owner... Imagine someone camping in your garden😮

It is legal in some places. Not all, but some. Notably Scotland and Dartmoor. Then there are scraps of land owned by the council, but not in use. Some of which can be quite sizable.

Yes, this is a serious issue, at least (for me) in that it makes the whole affair stressful - "wild" camping becomes "stealth" camping depending on the circumstances. However, actual prosecutions have been extremely rare, and usually involve refusal to heed requests to leave, damage to property, etc., and I trust that most people are amenable to friendly solution (including, of course, my readiness to evacuate). The "someone camping in your garden" is a bit misleading, since most of us don't have gardens of hundreds of acres that we hardly use, which is the case with most of the places we wild camp. Your link looks really useful, thanks. I would love to be able to find landowners to ask their permission. The nearest I've got to that is when a guy walking his dog said he knew the owner, and "he wouldn't mind you camping here at all. Why don't you go down to the farm house and ask him to fill up your water bottle?" (I was trying to find springs marked on the map, but they were mostly dry. I found a spring.) I often wonder if it's possible to set up some kind of wild-camper certification system, with a membership fee, the proceeds going to landowners who offer parts of their land for wild camping. It would depend on basic training for, and good behaviour from, the members, with sanctions for anyone abusing the system.

@@lettersquashmost land owners are amicable but not all, while out on mtb I came across some walkers who warned me the land owner was only a couple of minutes behind them and didn't take kindly to tourists of any kind... 2 minutes later I came across her... A lady in her late 60's..i pulled over to one side of this single track lane to let her get past and casually asked where the track led to.. She told me where it went and asked I close gates behind me and there was no problem using the paths. Moral of the story is for most land owners it's not worth the hassle of evicting you especially if it's for only one night but it still there right if they feel your being a nuisance so behave and leave with your rubbish and you should be sweet.

Your Alt-bergs look very well cared for ! I recommend rinsing the laces with cold water to remove the soap residue. Best regards from America.
