.. Manoeuvres and counting boat lengths is complete BS. There are a million reasons and situations that might require different responslses. Just be able to handle your boat perfectly in any conditions.... and btw approaching someone in water from windward side in heavy weather is a bad idea. Also picking up a buoy is nothing like getting an unconscious person on board. I 💬 NK MOB drills are just basic boat handling.

i suggest a little more practice pulling actual people or weighted dummies out the water as its much harder than a gallon jug and even significantly reduces speed and adds heal, all elements that can confuse and complicate practiced responses

I prefer to sheet in the main tight on the downwind leg so that I can point toward "Bob" after I turn up on the last leg without wasting time trying to sheet in the main, which by the time you do you've already lost too much speed. And without the main, you can't point. If your pattern relies of blowing all your sails and drifting up toward Bob, then it will be hit and miss.

Getting your MLB backboard is the hard part, especially if the MLB is unconscious! The key here is keep everybody on board to begin with. Man Overboard equals death!

Sees what looks like the Richmond Bridge. (Is that the Richmond Bridge?) Sees refinery tanks in the background. (Yup that's the Richmond bridge) Was just there last Wednesday. Was planning on going to the delta, but wow it got soupy fast. Ended up staying at Loch Lomand.

Picked up a great new tip with this video... prior to tensioning clew, raise the boom to level with the line of reef points... should have been common sense, but I''ve never done this... thanks!!! Each to his own, but I think it is best practice to always heave-to when taking in a reef point.... no mistakes with inexperienced crew manning the helm... form the habit of heaving to before reefing and you will avoid the problems that can easily occur. Also, it's good practice to ensure tension on lazy jacks before dropping halyard. to hook the cringle... keep the slacked sail tamed.

I was out last weekend in 15 knots and having fun. Then it started gusting to 25. My sister steered the boat while I tried to reef the main. It was like the 3 Stooges. But without 2 of them. I got it done but it was a struggle. You guys make it look easy in a light wind. But at 25 knots it would be a lot funnier.

One of the best! Fast recovery. No time waisted taking in sails and starting engines. Having an extra crew member start the engine, leaving it in neutral, as a backup plan to aid with the final closing maneuver might be a good idea. However, the figure 8 keeps you close and gives you the ability to stall into irons at the MOB. There may be time needed to get that crew aboard.

Thumbs up for raise the head back up @ 3:25 and same thumbs up for approval after checking for traffic @ 4:50. Duel meaning for same hand signal can be confusing. Might I suggest index finger up/down while turning in small circle for raise & lower respectively. Let the thumbs up/down mean what it is historically been known for, approval or disapproval. Unless we are talking about Roman Gladiators, then it is always thumbs down..... lol Great video and when I showed the kids, we now call it the 9 reefing steps or 3 times 3..... They have already been taught that Housekeeping is always the last step.

I was trying to see if there was another good MOB video and while some are good they are for motor yachts or sailboats with motors. My class uses 23' ensigns without a motor! This is the best for video for me. Again, thank you so much! I have to practice today and show I can do this Saturday! I am confident with a few practice runs I will be successful!

Well done. I like the little tip on the slip knot on the jam cleat. I might add just one minor detail under the heading of assessing the situation with regard to traffic and sea room. When possible, it is a good idea to be on starboard tack while reefing, when you are less maneuverable. You retain rights over almost everything except starboard sailboats to leeward. This way, if a line gets tangled during reefing, you can be a little safer taking extra time to clear it.

This is a good video for very experienced boaters, but I think it is missing a huge consideration: it is often the captain (ie the most experienced person on the boat) who ends up falling overboard. This leaves people who have not trained in rescue, or even in operating a boat to save the victim! Even experienced boaters struggle to rescue a man overboard, and inexperienced boaters are very unlikely to be able to. To address this issue, I have recently patented a device to help make overboard rescue faster and more reliable than traditional methods, regardless of the experience of the boat operator. The device I patented is called Rescu Swim'r, and it works as a rudder and helps vector the life ring safely to the overboard passenger. It can be easily attached to any Type IV PFD. In trials WITHOUT the device it took an average of 9min 51sec for people to get a PFD to the man overboard, but WITH Rescu Swim'r it took the same group of people on average 1min 14sec. Huge difference! Time saved not only increases the chance of survival of the man overboard, but also increases the chance that they'll still have control of their limbs (before cold-water shock sets in) and be able to actually help themselves re-board the boat. Traditional rescue methods just don't save people fast enough, Rescu Swim'r uses simple physics to solve that problem. Check out the website (rescuswimr.com) for more info; we made videos and have trial footage to show how Rescu Swim'r works.
