It's the fiddle part only, with chord symbols for the verse and the first half of the chorus. You should be able get the tune of the singing for those parts if you're playing alone. Let me know how it goes!

Fantastic series, thank you so much. I was asked to play this as the exit piece for a wedding coming up and it's so hard. Also,, I've never played the violin as a "fiddle", snd I'll be playing alone. I could hardly even figure out what the notes were on Tim's recording, they went so fast so this was so great and so helpful. I personally loved the pace that you went. The song is so intricate that it was perfect for learning.

Here’s the link to the performance where they play it in standard tuning (G)… m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eam6iWiro6-njpY&pp=ygUTY293Ym95IHRha2UgbWUgYXdheQ%3D%3D
@erikm8372 Жыл бұрын
I am so glad you brought up the key & the open tuning! Literally, nobody else has mentioned that…I agree it’s easier in G, and you can use the app Amazing Slow downer by RoniMusic to adjust the key…it’s a great app for $30. Used it for 20 years! But, still, I don’t think Martie ever adjusted her fiddles to make it easier (which may speak volumes in regards to her training). I can see her hand in the music videos, concert, etc. and she’s playing the root/tonic note (whether it’s Ab, Gb, whatever it is) on the D-string, with her fourth finger, since there are no open strings possible in that key and GDAE. Also she plays the fourth of the scale (Cb?) with her fourth finger on the A string. And the fifth (Db) on G string, as you say, for vibrato but also because she keeps standard tuning…Interestingly, and you may know this, but Martie is left-handed yet has always played a right-handed fiddle! Maybe that does something to naturally help her with dexterity? I can’t even fathom bowing with my weak hand. But anything’s possible. So if you watch the original music video (which is just beautiful visually) or any live performance of this song from before 2010, you can see her playing every note, not tuned down! I can’t imagine. It’s just so laborious, but maybe her being left-handed does her a favor. During their tour a couple years ago, the _DCXVII_ tour (I think that’s the name-the tour where everything was black & white themed, Martie had a white electric violin, etc), they actually performed it in G MAJOR for the tour! I was so surprised!
@FiddleGeeks11 ай бұрын
I do see her using open strings on the video...she tunes down not for ease but for resonance. The instrument doesn't sound the same played in Gb with standard tuning. Fascinating!

It’s definitely a good stepping stone for third position playing. But once you get the general melody down you can actually do quite a bit of the solos in normal first position.

Also I don’t do this, as I don’t like tape and stickers on my fiddle’s fingerboard, but music like this is good for use with fret markers or whatever they’re called… just one or two, and preferably a black or brown color 😂

Do I squeak bc I can’t bow straight ?
@FiddleGeeks Жыл бұрын
That may be the reason. If it's the E string, you may have some rosin on the string. Clean your strings regularly and when you hear it start to squeak, dig in with your bow a little. On other strings, this may also be due to bow hand tension. Play with it and see what happens!

I find these silent exercises useful for early mornings when my husband's trying to sleep and when I'm stuck somewhere without my fiddle. When would you use them?
@PWL1371 Жыл бұрын
Always hit the thumbs up button! Think the video was good and very informative. Gives people something to think about. Number 4 hits home the most. Made me think of one of my music teachers in six grade back in 1982-83. Had several that year, she captivated us with her unique style. When she taught a new song, she would bring the original in and let us listen to it and know how it was supposed to sound. Always made class fun and you wanted to try and be the best you could be. I think what keeps a lot of the "older" generation from seeking help out is limitations to do what is needed properly and the feeling of needing to get past " Marry had a little lamb" or Twinkle twinkle little star. After this series of videos I'd be highly interested in how you address these two issues with adult learning 🙂

What is your recommendation for speeding the hokum bowing technique up? Just use a metronome?

I'm so excited & emotional! My mom passed when I was a teenager, & she played the violin/fiddle. I inherited her violin, but never learned how to play (I play flute). My brother is getting married in 1 year & asked me to play our mom's violin for his wedding. I said yes & started violin lessons. "Amarillo by Morning" was my mom's favorite song, & there's no better way for me to honor her than by playing this song on her violin.

This is amazing! I have a friend who had a right sided CVA and has hyperesthesia and inability to determine how much pressure he is exerting on the bow grip. Any suggestions to help improve bowing when the sende of position in space ( proprioception) is impaired? Thanks for all your videos!
@FiddleGeeks2 жыл бұрын
I'm still struggling with that! I really have to focus. I added to my description some exercises your friend has probably already done with his neurologist. Doing these regularly will improve his general proprioception (as will things like brushing teeth in the dark and other non-dangerous tricks). I believe even lower body proprioception is important to sensing yourself in space, so I included everything. These exercises are great, too-- www.redboxfitness.com/proprioception/ In general though, relaxing the arm as much as possible and using the thumb to press up to refine the pressure on the bow (as I describe around 2:45 in this video) is key. Use your ear to gauge success. Relaxing is tricky after a CVA! I'll do a video with massage techniques if you're curious.
