I remember when there were nothing but fields along Plantation Rd and rt.24...... nothing but fields meant for growing food. Corn and Lima beans mostly. I grew up on the corner of 24 and rt.1.. I remember when there were woods and farm houses. There was no mall or outlets... So heartbreaking to see the destruction of what was once a beautiful area.

I started driving the BW Parkway in 1967. I would use it late at night sometimes around midnight. I would drive about 15 miles and not see but half a dozen cars. Sometimes seeing how fast I could go with no traffic.

The worst parkway ever. My daughter got hit from behind from the speeding driver who did a hit and run. Thank God she wasn't hurt but shaken up. Her bumper was destroyed.

Was this video taken during the height of the pandemic? I asked this question because no one moves that fast on the BW-Parkway anymore. It's always a Parking lot.

@@joehawk9839 I feel like a weekend wouldn't be as terrible at least. Bear in mind that I live in Dover, DE, so coming back home, we had to sit in traffic for 40 minutes just to get on the Bay Bridge. As an aside, I have a spreadsheet tracking each of my videos. Comparing to real time, my average speed on this video was 50.1 MPH. I specifically wanted to take the B-W Parkway, because when I was a kid, my father took the B-W Parkway on the way to DC when we went there in 2003. I hadn't been on it in many, many years. If only the mount on my dashcam didn't have problems on this trip and my footage could have come out better... I tried several methods of stabilization (FFmpeg's vidstab library and fiddling with Cinelerra's motion filters), but nothing came out all that great...

Many moons ago, if Delaware had the foresight of population growth south and west of New Castle County, they could have developed an extension of the Delaware Route 1 Turnpike (except that it would parallel US Route 113 south of Milford) and developed an east-west "Sussex County Turnpike" using Delaware Route 404 (become a MD Route 404 expressway to US Route 50 near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge) and US Route 9 (which would hypothetically, connect to US Route 9 and the GSP via a Delaware Bay version of either the Chesapeake Bay Bridge or Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel).

I did some research last summer at the DE Public Archives and they had some far reaching plans back in the 50s and 60s. I don't think they expected the population to explode like it did though. This is my article on some of what I found: ianpeters.org/roads/deroute1.html I've been curious about how development of higher capacity highways on seasonal coastal routes (e.g. DE/MD-404, NJ-55/47/347, US-13/113) can be justified, especially since traffic can be very minimal in the off season as compared to the summer (I'm honestly of the belief that the completion of NJ-55 isn't economically feasible, I certainly don't think it's feasible for a Delaware Bay Bridge Tunnel...I found a study from the 80s that described why). That's a research project I'm in the midst of.

I have a video of Dover to Assateague that basically covers that. On that subject, since I live in Dover, I wouldn't do any video that covers the whole length of DE-1 in one trip, as that wouldn't make sense for me.

How was it like leaving Northern New Jersey driving back to Delaware on that day before Easter? Also, that's some tolls to pay (NJTP, Del Mem Brg (westbound only), and DE 1).
@roadwaysofdelaware
@roadwaysofdelaware 5 ай бұрын
The traffic wasn't that bad actually. We drove up and back the same day without issue. Traffic was heavy but it was moving the whole way. Yeah the tolls are ridiculous anymore, that's why I diverted from the NJTP to I-295. I'd normally shunpike the higher Roth Bridge toll on a weekend, but I was too tired to deal with the extra stoplights. I did shunpike the higher Dover toll though.

Yeah I've covered that area in the past, in my videos of DE-9. We decided to turn onto DE-1 from DE-72, since the rain looked pretty bad and I didn't want to get stuck on a flooded portion of DE-9, especially the section that runs right along the Delaware River through the Augustine Beach area.

@@MrJon92as Oh sorry, now I understand your comment. I don't recall if we saw the refinery this time when we were heading down the hill on DE-72, but I used to live in Newark (I did my masters at UD) and I think I remember seeing it or the Delaware Memorial Bridge in the distance when I drove DE-72 regularly in the past. 3:05 About the renumbering of I-79 and I-76 Eastern through Pittsburgh into I-279 and I-376, respectively, it happened in *1972* . 5:48 Speaking of I-376, the extension in the 2000s helped drivers take an alternate route of I-79 for drivers going to New Castle PA, Youngstown OH, Akron OH and Cleveland, and even Erie PA which they later took I-80 and back to I-79, but part of the extension between US 422 and PA 51 is tolled and the entire extension was completed in 2009.

Honestly, they should decommission both I-595 and I-97 in favor of making both highways an extension of I-895, with I-895 between I-95 and I-97 being re-signed as I-895 Spur (much like the I-270 Spur connecting I-270 South with the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway).

And the destination for SR 261 (which becomes PA 261 at the PA/DE State Line) at the end of the video (where SR 141 becomes SR 261) is where I grew up, although PennDOT truncated PA 261 at US Route 322 (Conchester Highway) many years ago (SR 261 use to terminate at US Route 1 in Chester Heights, which prior to 1945, was a part of Aston). Also, Bill Haley (yes, of the famed rockabilly group Bill Haley & His Comets) grew up right near Booth's Corner (which is the intersection of PA 261 and PA 491, which is briefly SR 491 and terminates at SR 92 at a RIRO intersection) and is not far from the Ebright Azimuth, the highest point in Delaware, (which could just be an unmarked area in Pennsylvania if it were not for the 12-Mile Circle around New Castle).
