It really is pretty awesome how much Sound Transit manages to do with this system. Using low-floor trams will hinder the system in the long run, but Link is a colossal step forward. I can't wait until the 2 Line bridge is done and it connects into the Downtown Tunnel. It's going to be transformative for the region

There were multiple attempts to build a heavy rail metro system that were voted down by the public. The light rail option was the only way to sell it to people to get a yes vote. If we were still holding out for heavy rail nothing would've been built by now.

@ScottyDoesStuff8 күн бұрын
Enjoy the ride! The people of the Eastside cities North of 520 who are paying more per capita for that line and will never get our own light rail sure do enjoy paying for your convenience! (We don't actually. But please, keep telling us all how much you enjoy avoiding the traffic that we can never get out of... while we pay through the nose for it.)
@pugetsoundrailfan74488 күн бұрын
1) Sound Transit operates under a subarea equity system where (in general) the tax revenue from each subarea goes to fund projects in that subarea. In the case of Lynnwood Link, the North King and Snohomish County subareas funded the project, not East King. The East King subarea contributes toward projects like the I-405 BRT, East Link, and Downtown Redmond Link (among several others). 2) I agree, the north Eastside is overdue for light rail and it's an area that's often overlooked by ST. 3) You are more than welcome to express differing opinions and criticisms in my comments, but (unless I've misinterpreted) I think some of the hostility in this comment is a bit misplaced because I also live on the Eastside north of 520. I simply like trains and I don't think it's wrong to celebrate new rail infrastructure even if it doesn't directly benefit me.
@walawala-fo7ds7 күн бұрын
Well, I never use 405 and 520 but my gas taxes go to pay for that. That's just the way public infrastructure works. What you should consider is that you do in fact benefit from options. You now have the option to drive against traffic to Lynnwood and get on Link to Seattle. Or once the i90 bridge opens, you have the option to drive to any of the east link stations and ride to Seattle, SeaTac and Lynnwood regardless of traffic. So while maybe not as close as you'd like, it sure is a lot closer than ever before. Sound transit can never build a light rail station in every enclave to please everyone. At best they can offer better options than before but all systems, even as developed as those in Japan and Europe are not perfect.
@Wingnut3267 күн бұрын
places like Kirkland have no one else to blame but their own city council, who are famously anti-transit. go take your misguided frustrations to them instead. enjoy watching redmond people skip traffic when their stations open next year.

@Fingolfin_the_Warden3 күн бұрын
People in that area don't want light rail. Under pressure from the usual anti-tax, anti-transit, NIMBY types, Kirkland's City Council voted to oppose ST3 going through Kirkland, which killed the possibility of a Link line going deeper into that area.

@cmdrls2128 күн бұрын
@@princessofthecape2078 would heavy rail be better? Yes. Is light rail better than sitting in traffic on I5? Yes. the reason the system is successful is not because it completes with heavy rail. The reason the investment is supported and successful is because there is no other choice as both heavy rail or highway expansion would need extensive federal money that simply doesn't exist. So link only competes with a highway that is used beyond capacity and it is approaching it's end of life. That means more maintenance and lane closures which means more traffic on top of explosive population increase. In this regard, the Everett and Tacoma links are bargains compared to widening I5 or building a new multi lane highway that will me opposed by literally everyone in its path.
@GobbiExists8 күн бұрын
If it was a heavy rail line, I can’t imagine what the cost would be. The federal government doesn’t particularly like public transit; light rail would be the most cost-effective way to move tons of people. Light rail has its limitations, but this was most likely the best way Seattle could make a mass transit system, even if it sacrifices capacity and speed for a rapid transit line to be made. Plus, people love it.

@@realquadmoo I know right? Best of all, the zoning laws for public green space are clear: you cannot build on the golf course and park without making the same public space available elsewhere. There is also a protected aquifer on that park which means no environmental review allows anybody to build anything else. The station costs nearly 200 million but has basically no potential. Meanwhile sound transit says it doesn't have enough funds to install more bike lockers and the wait lists are years long.
