I have used a wood scraper to remove the first layer of crud! It was so bad that I didn't even remove the clear coat! LOL

I wonder if TSP would have helped with the grime.... it's a degreaser and "pre-sander". Works especially well on prepping kitchen cabinets for painting. I do like how th piece turned out, sort of a cross between "farmhouse" and "Boho".

I would think so too. But I am so new at this I don't want to step on anyone's toes.

Maybe try a carbide paint scraper first and then sand it and then clean it. I would also just scrub it like crazy with dish soap and water. And hose it down with a pressure washer if you have it. If you let it dry in the Sun or you dry it off after you pressure wash it you can do that.
