As a child of the 50's and 60's, I joined the United States Marine Corps in 1971 at 17, I realized that Soupy was different than anyone else on T.V. at that time. Acid hadn't affected Hollyweird, (on the screen yet) but through life after listening to Flo n Eddy I now know Soupy was stoned. He had the best dope.

I never missed his show and what a thrill to see it here on KZbin! I believe that recording is Oscar Peterson and "Mumbles" (Clark Terry.)

Hilarity, stunningly intelligent writing(ad-libs?), and a lion puppet scat singing jazz. Right there with Bullwinkle and Ernie Kovacs. Never before, never again. Thanks, YT for the archives.

I watched Soupy in early 60s after school faithfully! Loved the show. One particular show Soupy grabbed Pookies hair and at the same time the puppet jerked quickly down ward. He accidentally yanked his hair off in his hand. Pookie popped up bald and Soupy and everyone else was laughing so hard. Loved it.

It's sad channel 7 Detroit kept so few episodes of Soupy when he started out there. Those were treasures they let slip away. I watched him everyday in the 1950s and early 1960s. Every kid in The Detroit area did. I'm 71 now.

No wonder I turned into a nut case. Particularly, when I remember when Soupy got caught for hanky panky.

Despite Pookie being in blackface 🫥 this was one of my first exposures to scat-style jazz as a 50s child. 😎📺

I lived for this show, afternoons on WNEW-TV, Channel 5, in the New York metro area. Had the pleasure of meeting him years later when he was filling on one of the WABC-TV morning shows prior to Regis coming to town. Told him how I really loved his show, and he was very gracious.

Great - many thanks for uploading! Watched Soupy EVERY weekday after school over WNEW ( I think). Soupy and Mr. Chuck McCann are favorites. It’s hard to distinguish between regression and personal growth, but with these guys I don’t care.

When I was in grade school, Soupy was my favorite. He also had a late nite show. Soupy did his show from the Maccabees Bldg which is across the street from the Detroit Public Library and Wayne State Univ. Sometimes he did his show on the sidewalk and would talk to people walking past. For a time, Soupy was pretty close with Frank Sinatra. I remember one show where Frank took a pie in the face. There was one show where the walls on the studio set were being pushed in. I found out later that several of the kids in my class were invited on set and they did that. One evening, my parents and I watched a show that Soupy did in the Grosse Pointe High Gym for free. Soupy was a naturally funny guy in a nice way.

that I had mailed him. I remember one of the many times he was kicked off the air. Mini-skirts had just become fashionable. He remarked that gjrls were wearing their skirts so short these days that soon they'd have to comb their hair in 2 places! Soupy just wasn't for kids. I think he was a stoner too, check out his eyes in some of the later episodes.

The loose, hip atmosphere, including the sounds of the set crew breaking up, was something no show had, save for one. I have a feeling that Steve Allen was an influence on the comedic genius that was Soupy Sales; how could they not have known each other with the similar wild, spontaneous humor they generated?
