My mother was born in 1928. She was taken out of school in the 6th grade to care for her father and older brother and older sister. Her mother had mental illness and would run away months, years then return. My mother would always listen to this song and pray for the blue bird to appear. This song was played at her funeral.

When I was about 12, my father and I were at the Harriman TN Cracker Barrel early one morning, and Monroe's bus was pulling in. I was just learning guitar.. and my father said.. Go over and wait til he steps off.. and ask for an autograph. I was Scared, and did not want to, but he goaded me into it. Well, Mr. Monroe (who looked like he'd just awakened) couldn't have been nicer. He signed his name for me, AND gave me a quarter. I still have both.

Note this: He left his native country because another "bloody standard of tyranny" had been raised against us. I think this performance has more than one meaning.

Love this catchy spiritual representing an illiterate oral tradition. (It ain't in the book of James, and his name is "Bartimaeus.")
