Why is it that almost all current yacht have a racing rig? Even if obviously cruisers. A mast head rig is so much better. It gives better support to the mast, but most of all allows the mainsail to be let out to 90deg, so you can spill wind, lay a hull, and easier to reef.

Hmm. Unless you are a multi millionaire, it won’t be a new boat, stuff will go wrong. So can you raise anchor and sails by hand, can you tack I to an anchorage with non functioning motor? A 35ft Woods Banshee would be as big I I would want. Note, only standing headroom in hulls, who stands up on the bridge deck…..he / she who doesn’t appreciate the issue with windage, both at anchor, and having to make headway into a Gale.

@@CatamaranFreedom Hey, what does slow mean in your world? There is no comparison to anything here. Just saying the boat is slow is like saying the Porsche is slow and no one knows you just drove a Formula 1 car. The pictures are very bad because they are constantly panned back and forth without focus on anything. Your comments can hardly refer to the blurred pictures. The viewer is not taken along and waits, even though the shakiness makes him sick, for the resolution of your headline. But unfortunately that doesn't come either, except that the boat was slow.....what is slow? In how much headwind and current, at what power setting of the engines and what consumption was the boat and how fast? Decribe the boats you've sailed under which circumstances..... Blue Skies Gregor

@@gregorbehling7026 oh I didn't actually think you wanted an answer! My bad. It is slow compared to most cruising cats in that length class (check out multihull dynamics.com), mainly do to it's physical characteristics. Wide hulls, large wetted surface, quite heavy and fixed keels. But those are the "metrics". It's another thing that the boat "feels" slow, unresponsive at the helm, slow to accelerate etc, but that's a subjective experience. Does that come a little bit closer to answering your question?
@marceld6061
@marceld6061 2 жыл бұрын
To add to other's comments you might want to explain WHY a bigger boat sails faster. Longer boats have faster hull speeds due to their longer waterline generally but, a performance boat will sail faster than a charter boat. Research the hull speed of the boat you are interested in buying to know how fast you can travel in optimum conditions. A 45 foot Outremer will sail faster than a 50 foot Lagoon. Also, the larger boats can handle larger sail area. Which brings up another point. Catamarans CAN capsize. They sail differently than monohulls ("regular boats" to you). Since the extra hull offers resistance to heeling which spills the power of the wind from the sail in the monohull example, the catamaran tends to just sail faster, or will fly a hull before capsizing. This is why most, if not all cats reef their sails before this happens. Larger catamarans can be a detriment too. A lot of people load them down with stuff. They are not the same as monohulls which are displacement hulls. You can load up a monohull with provisions and not worry about affecting performance but, not so with a cat. A family cruising a larger cat (45' for example) can carry the same amount of gear that they did on a smaller cat ( 38' for example) and achieve better performance because they didn't overload the larger one. But the tendency is to add more toys and gear to fill it up and weigh it down. Added weight is your enemy on a catamaran. If you don't NEED it leave it on the dock. I have heard a story that catamaran owner's will cut their toothbrush handles in half to save weight! 😂
@MrEmiosk
@MrEmiosk Ай бұрын
Yeah, cats speed is how light and shallow its draft is while still keeping good lateral slip. The space inbetween the hulls is supposed to be leg room more than extra storage or in most cases in modern designs, housing.

I agree that most commentors have their expertise from watching Parlay. But they have a point: The "handful" is almost 100 confirmed cases now, but most boats haven't checked their bulkheads. The 400 has bulkhead issues, too. Plus someone just discovered a cracked mast support column, and several owners have checked and found the exact same damage. The 380? Just look at the nice 2010/2011 380 owner's version in Spain, the one that is listed with half a dozen brokers. Or Daria's sistership Monika, also for sale in Spain. Or Kerika, which has all port side bulkheads detached and one cracked.

The 380 never reached 1000 units as far as I know, but I could be wrong. My three examples are just the two units I know with bulkhead problems which are currently on the market. I have more on file that were sold, some of them years ago. But I don't want to convince you of anything. Well kept and clean.... This boat is Daria of London, hull #683. She served 2013-2019 in a Russian charter company in the Balearics. The charter fleet was liquidated in late 2019 and I looked at all their 380s just prior to Covid. What a mess! Daria was the worst example: saildrives badly pitted from galvanic corrosion, both props and one rudder bent, keel and rudders indicate several groundings, saildrives both had mayonaise instead of oil, the hull was cracked and torn wide open at the port topside from crashing into a dock including damage to the aft door bulkhead, multiple leaks, and basically _no_ maintenance at all. Everything was old, flithy, overdue for replacement, ... a piece of junk with some limited structural damage. This is a classic example of a junk boat that was polished up. They replaced a lot of things and put in lots of elbow grease. IIRC the asking price in 2019 was 140k euro ex tax, and their other 380s sold between 120-130k Euro. Daria was the worst example and surely sold for less than that. Current asking around 200k euro. Sounds like a good deal, not for the next owner but for the current one. The reason for being slow may be a wrong prop. These have surely been replaced and no clue if they used the right size & pitch. The boat at the end of the video is a Lagoon 42.

@@CatamaranFreedom very true. Thing I keep seeing is folks tend to push the envelope for the boat and gear they got. Get something better and you go out in things that are worse. Anyone going the living aboard cruising route shouldn't be under the illusion that any boat marketed towards them is safe in a hurricane. I've been doing a lot of reading lately on all the accidents I can find over the years. Almost every catamaran accident I've seen has been from 1 of 2 things. Folks with low skills making mistakes that lead to the boat having substantial damage or failing to see to maintenance. Folks with high skills letting the confidence in a boat put them in a bad situation. That former group isn't going to do any better with a better boat. That latter group would actually be better off in a lesser boat if it convinces them to not be so stupid. One thing I do keep seeing though is the folks who are cruising successfully are meticulous about timing their trips with a constant eye towards safe passages. Even then they can still get stuck in a squall but nothing that should come close to taking out any of the catamarans that are commonly being used in the charter industry. So in the end if I had to choose between a bigger boat or better quality gear I think gear is the way to go. The better gear would be everything from better chain and anchors, to sails and lines, well maintained engines with spares, and last but absolutely not least.... the best comms gear I could run combined with something like predictwind. Now if you can afford all the extra bells and whistles go for the bigger boat.

@@CatamaranFreedom why modify it for speed? Get a boat designed for speed. Trade offs are what they are. This boat is designed for a particular niche. Changing it to a more aggressive sail plan might get you more speed, but it would also likely make the boat riskier. If you dealt with the increased risk you would then have spent so much money that it would have been easier to sell this boat and buy the appropriate one. Case in point: One stay vs two stays for the mast. A boat meant to be out in bad conditions should have 2. If you want a more aggressive boat don't even consider one that doesnt have 2. Otherwise you are likely to push your boat into a situation where everything can go from fine to really really bad in a moment. This boat can and will get you to many places cruisers want to go. The trips have to be well planned of course. The boat is definitely one meant for better weather conditions. Saying all that you can find these boats for sale occasionally in some remote places. So someone sailed it there.

I disagree about needing 2 stays. The 380 Mast is only 57ft above the waterline. In comparison, a 450F is 75 ft AWL. The 380 doesnt need 2 stays for that height. The 380 has a CE rating for every ocean in the world. Many of them have done multiple circumnavigations.

Hi, It is a beautiful comfortable and safe sailboat but it is, for me, a houseboat or "Catacaravan". I like yachts that are nervous at the helm and fast, therefore the trimaran.

@@CatamaranFreedom ... Yes please, next time you interview a multihull designer, like R Wood, why not about trimarans.

Hi Gabriel, I have a noob question: What do you do at nights if your are sailing single-handed? I mean can you just leave the cockpit and go to sleep?

Actually that's a pretty common question ! Usually what I did, and i think most people do, is sleepp for around 30 min, get up check the surroundings and sails. And then repeat. The autopilot will steer for you :) It's very demanding but a cool experience. I have written a few words about it ok my website: www.catamaranfreedom.com/how-to-sleep-comfortably-on-any-boat/#Sleeping_On_a_Boat_In_The_Middle_of_The_Sea
