Born and raised in Chorlton - on - Medlock (Hathersage Road / High Street) right next door to Rusholme /Moss Side …. Back in the late 1950’s when we were kids these areas of Manchester were our playgrounds …. We kids knew where every apple , pear and conker tree was also goosegogs, rhubarb, strawberries etc etc. We got into a lot of mischief and there were some neighbourhood gangs around but there was nothing like the problems that neighbourhoods have these days … drugs, stabbings, mopped thefts etc etc. As we got older (early teens) we used to go round washing cars and selling fire wood … also the old trick of minding cars around Maine Road when Man City were playing home games … then sneaking into the ground to watch the match …. such fun ….. Ahhhh the good old days ….. come on …. Somebody remind me …. was it the Trocadero picture house on Wilmslow Road ? Where we used to go for the Saturday mattines …. I remember all the old black and white cowboy movies split up into episodes just to make sure you came back next week ….. happy days….. Oh yes and learning to swim in High Street Baths ….. the baths are still there and hopefully being renovated …. Went back there a couple of years back and did the tour. Brought back many happy memories …. Vicky Park School Gala’s … anyone else who went to Vicky Park Secondary Modern School back in the day ?

My Dad was Raymond Hall, Son of George Hall who founded “Hall’s Famous Food Shops’” (there was one (!) - that had the fresh veg at the front corner entrance, and the fish entrance round the corner on Dickinson Road) Dad was demobbed from the RAF and took over the shop in 1945. George had died during the war. As a child on school holidays, I used to sit in the potato bins from which the assistants would scoop them out. Notable customers were Sir John Barbarolli of The Halle Orchestra and Coco the Clown when Bertram Mills Circus was on Platt Fields. Thanks for the post !

Anybody remember the delicatessen opposite Withington Library? Late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s? They sold all kinds of exotic food like salami. 😀 Things we take for granted now.
