Oh yeah. Shuffle foot blues. Elements of hillbilly shuffle beat with finger picking & bottle neck slide. And of course, that plaintive whine of lost love or bad times.

Saw him live at Lancaster University in England in the late 60’s. He played about 4 hours - only quit when the power was turned off and he was escorted off by the cops. We would have stayed until dawn if they hadn’t shut it down. Absolutely amazing performance.

I was so pleased to hear this song played live by my uncle and his friend at my birthday the other day. I had no idea he blew harp.

This song was played by a lot of the blues pioneers: Lightnin’ Hopkins, J L Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy, Big Joe Williams (wrote it) and later by Dylan, Van Morrison and later still, Aerosmith and AC/DC. My fav version is by R L Burnside I think recorded within the last decade tho he was a pioneer himself. It’s on YT.

Mississippi Fred McDowell passed away in 1972. I love these old Southern States Black guys, it's them we have to thank for the Blues and Rock n Roll. They sang from the heart. RIP Fred. From England.

Awesome, old school blues. Leslie West covered this and while I love West's interpretation, this is sweet!

Saw ol Fred in MN at college in '72, shortly before he passed. He sipped apricot brandy between numbers and got pretty loose towards the end, got out of his chair and sauntered around on his last song. I was mesmerized by the awesome raw sound, so memorable! RIP, Mr MacDowell.

I know you're dead Fred, but I didn't have a chance to thank you while you were still alive. No one can say whether or not you can hear me now. It's a matter of belief. I'll believe that you can hear me.

I've seen you up I've seen you down I've seen you half dead on the ground I've seen your rise I've seen your fall I Guess you can say I've seen it all I've seen you climb I've seen you slip I've seen you pull every last damn trick I've seen you scrape I've seen you crawl I guess you were never that great at all How quick you are to come on back When you got too big you left us flat It's sorry to watch you beg and plead Watch you crawl around on your hands and knees I felt your love I felt your hate I felt sorry for you and I stopped the pain I felt so close I felt so far I still stayed true when we were at war I felt you warm I felt you cold And I knew your words were growing old I had a friend who was always near And I miss you now 'cause you're not here How quick you are to come on back When the one you left for left you flat I laughed when you asked just to stay friends Why patch a wound that just won't mend I want to know how did you think That I'd owe you one little thing I want to know how did you think That I would let you get to me
only heard this yesterday but it's already one of my favourites

Down in the shadows of your deepest secrets I sleep next to the precepts you hold most dear Your heart is in my province, hour upon hour I shiver when you feel the cold Everything you say I hear Like a bomb and its fuse We bring bright light But I could be a devil to you I could bite like a tarantula Deliciously unsuspecting Protecting you from all harm Except perhaps from these arms That hold you
