I recieve a announcement from a LDS branch of color I belong to.(Gensis group). They said many members of the the LDS church in Utah are experiencing extreme racism from other white members. Because of that they devoted the next 3 months of fast meetings to dealing with this pain. How can this still be? I hope member that are in positions to reach a large audience can get this out so a change within can come about and the suffering can end. When the biggest challeng is not the world but attending your our LDS ward something is horribly amiss. Do you just stop going to church until after this goes away? Thanks for listening

Addiction is a brain disease. The brain chemicals shift and change to adapt to stimulus. Sex addiction is not in the DSM5 but it is in the ICD11. Patrick Carnes says sexual addiction is:Sexual Addiction diagnostic Criteria[9] A. A minimum of three criteria met during a 12-month period: 1) Recurrent failure to resist impulses to engage in specific sexual behaviour. 2) Frequently engaging in these behaviours to a greater extent or longer duration than intended. 3) Persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to stop, to reduce, or to control behaviours. 4) Inordinate amount of time spent in obtaining sex, being sexual, or recovering from sexual experiences. 5) Preoccupation with the behaviour or preparatory activities. 6) Frequently engaging in the behaviour when expected to fulfill occupational, academic, domestic, or social obligations. 7) Continuation of the behaviour despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent social, financial, psychological, or physical problem that is caused or exacerbated by the behaviour. 8) Need to increase intensity, frequency, number, or risk of behaviours to achieve the desired effect or diminished effect with continued behaviours at the same level of intensity, frequency, number, or risk. 9) Giving up or limiting social, occupational, or recreational activities. 10) Distress, anxiety, restlessness, or irritability if unable to engage in the behaviors. ( Carnes PJ. Sexual addiction and compulsion: recognition, treatment, and recovery. CNS Spectr. 2000;5(10):63-72. [PubMed] [Google Scholar] [Ref list]) Those who have been sexually abused have a high likelihood to become addicted to pornography. This type of trauma alters the brain chemistry. People lose their jobs, intimate partners and family over this condition. It is very important that people suffering from this see a LICENSED psychotherapist (sex addictions therapist, psychologist, licensed professional counselor, licensed mental health counselor, licensed social worker etc). This is NOT something a coach can "treat." Coaches are not licensed to treat anyone and it is illegal to state you "treat" if you are a coach (practicing without a license). This includes Sara. Her website says "We are committed to using research in our treatment methods and dispelling biased claims that create unnecessary shame and panic." She does not have a license to treat and doesn't have a treatment method. Coaches trying to address an issue higher than their pay grade can cause harm. To understand this condition listen to an expert kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2LTgpl9ecSAh6s

Problem with using AI for information is it’s not always accurate and will make stuff up. I Watched a podcast where someone asked AI to tell them about Brigham Young. It was accurate all except for the fact that it said he was assassinated. Eventually it admitted he wasn’t assassinated and didn’t have a source for its statement. An anti-Mormon on TikTok used AI to find racist Brigham Young quotes with sources. All the quotes and sources AI provided were made up by AI. Because it couldn’t find racist BY quotes, it created quotes based on the racist sentiments of that time period. And attributed it to BY. So… there’s that.

“A lot of women have been taught in the Church…”? I’m interested to know how she’s come to the conclusion that the idea that women must caretake the man’s sexual needs is taught in church. In the world, yes, I’ve heard it. But as an active member for 40 years and as a bishop, I’ve never heard or seen this false principle taught or insinuated in the Church. True, I don’t attend RS or YW lessons every time, but really? I wonder how much of this is projecting our own experiences onto “the Church”. A young lady is taught this by her mom who’s an active member in the church. Because she perceives her mom as a representative of what it means to live the gospel, then she can easily draw the conclusion that “the Church teaches it’s my spiritual responsibility as a wife to caretake the sexual needs of my husband.” Love the episode, but some of this is painting with a little too broad a brush imo.

To clarify, I don't think that they're referring to "the church" teaching this, so much as it being an incorrect yet pervasive and infrequently addressed perspective. Actually, she mentions numerous times that this is more an effect of culture than it is the church's doctrine - the doctrine itself is actually quite beautiful when it comes to marital intimacy. Regardless, I think you bring up some good points: Being a world wide church, I agree, these are pretty broad brush strokes to be painting with. Just because it may be a pervasive part of a church culture in one area, doesn't mean that it also that way in another. I also agree with your assessment that this seems to be what the world is teaching more than what the church is teaching. Right on point! I'd like elaborate on that with a question, if I may: how often does the world's teachings find its way into our church meetings - sometimes in the most subtle of ways. I learned as a missionary that what I was teaching was much less important than what was being understood and I had to approach teaching with a focus on truly understanding my investigator if there was going to be any progress. If we and our and youth are listening to the Doctrines of the church through the lens of the world, the things being brought up in this interview are actually likely to be unspoken undertones (from the world) to what is understood. As Paul taught, "we see through a lens darkly." As a result, there needs to be both some exploration and correction of these undertones. Unless they are addressed and clarified with true doctrines, anyone could go on for years without realizing how much more joy they could have had OR how much pain could have been avoided if only they understood the doctrine correctly. If anything, some of my take aways from this interview were more along the lines of: "Holy cow! I didn't even realize ... 1-this was the problem! (but it makes total sense) 2-that there was something much better (in the form of true doctrine, understood) and 3-that I'm not the only one experiencing the effects of this." That has left me wanting to share with all my worldly friends: "there's a much higher and holier way than what the world has taught us." (I definitely don't shout that from the rooftops but now I'm more open to those conversations). You're right, we don't teach this in church but maybe we don't realize that it's part of what is being understood and is going on uncorrected. Talking about marital sex and intimacy is a bit of a taboo topic in many church cultures I've experienced, particularly among men. There are probably a myriad of reasons for that but, to me, it seems that this podcast represents one of the most under-addressed and simultaneously most important topics to have addressed within a gospel context. I'm not saying "pull out all the stops and let's make this our 5th Sunday lesson." I am saying is that, perhaps leaders should be more conscientious about it as they go about their duties. This should be taught by true gospel doctrines in the right settings, in the right ways, not left to be taught by the world and left a mystery to people. To leaders this is one of the most difficult paradoxes of living in the world but not of the world. Part of guiding the flock includes being able to recognize what worldly influences are affecting them so we can teach the appropriate healing and directing doctrines clearly enough that they hopefully choose a better life. If we're oblivious to the world's influence while we're leading, maybe we should try to be "in the world" a little more while still holding strong to our resolution to "not be of [it]." If awareness is an interest, I'd recommend looking up a group called "Axis," a non-profit Christian organization that emphasizes connecting parents and adults to the lives of youth (particularly in regard to worldly influences.) I've loved that their approach has been informative, firm, and connective in ways that teens respond well to. Adding a restored gospel lense to it I'm sure would greatly enhance it's effects. Here's a link to the Axis website: axis.org/?A%252F%252Fsearch.brave.com%252F

Your experience is not anything like mine. I've also been in the church 40+ years and in leadership callings. I was explicitly taught that women had to manage mens sexuality. Modesty standards were enforced with the explanation that her short skirt or low cut shirt would tempt me, and she would be responsible for the temptation. Pres Oaks told YW that they became walking pornography to the men, which is again women being responsible for mens sexuality. Nursing mothers were asked to leave the chapel so as not to tempt the YM instead if educating them. Missionaries talk about how the number of baptisms he performs is directly correlated to how beautiful his wife would be, which objectified her before she ever met him. This is the best info on sexuality and the church that I've heard yet. This should be mandatory training for all church leaders and available to the membership in general through an endorsement by the 1st Pres.

When I pause a moment to look back at my life every now and again it's easy to identify a handful of key players in shaping me to the person I am now. My ninth grade seminary teacher... Brother Mask was one of those key players. We always felt like we had a superhero for our teacher. We knew he loved us, but more importantly he reminded us that we were loved by loving Heavenly Father.

Honestly, I think things are better with less women in leadership positions. There's already too much feminizing, softening, watering down, focusing on sharing experiences rather than solid teaching, etc.

I don't think it's the number that is the problem. The YW, RS, and Primary have been lead by women for generations, but something has changed in the culture of the church to focus on the female aspects of the gospel. I hear that focus coming from male leaders at least as much as female leaders

The Introduction for the "Come Follow Me" manual states: "Keep in mind that learning the gospel, at its best, is home centered and Church supported. In other words, your main responsibility is to support the people you teach in their efforts to learn and live the gospel at home. Give them opportunities to share their experiences, thoughts, and questions about the scripture passages. Invite them to share the eternal truths they have found. This is more important than covering a certain amount of material." Imagine if each class started with the teacher saying, "What spiritual experiences did you have with the scriptures this week?" And, "were there any verses you didn't understand?" And then instead of the teacher giving a lecture, the class members took most or all of the time to share the insights they got this week, or helped each other understand the scriptures better. I've seen this done before and it's amazing what happens! No more boring classes. And it certainly edifies the class members and encourages those who are not studying the scriptures at home to begin doing so. I think this is what "Home-centered and church-supported" looks like in Sunday School.

I LOVE the creative approach to including women's perspectives. Women are more than half the church and the research shows that you need both men's and women's perspectives working together to find good solutions to challenges. Good inspiration comes from good information. Also I'm not sure when it changed, but I'm in my 40s and I know my friend's mom was the Stake Sunday School Secretary when we growing up in Utah. So I'd be interested to know when some of thes changes to Sunday School being only available to ordained Priesthood holders were made.
@brettmajeske3525
@brettmajeske3525 Ай бұрын
Technically even today being an ordained Priesthood holder is not a requirement, just a very strong recommendation. Women are only to be called as Sunday School Presidents if there are not enough ordained Brothers, and even then the recommendation is non-ordained brothers before sisters. Councilors are supposed to be the same gender as the president, so a male Sunday School President is not supposed have female councilors or secretary. Which is not to say that Bishops and Stake Presidents always followed those guidelines. I know back in the 90s while I was on my mission a letter from the First Presidency came out about trying harder to find worthy Priesthood holders to fill the role. A Branch had the same female Sunday School President since it was organized back in the 70s. She was the widow of the original Branch President. I have talk to people who knew female Sunday School Presidents in rural Canada and in Branches in South America. This was also the same time that an effort was made to keep missionaries out of Branch Presidencies, which in the 60s, 70s, and 80s had become fairly common. From different records it seems it was far more common before the Sunday School organization was reorganized back in the 50s under Bruce R McConkie. Apparently, there was not even an official recommendation as to the gender of Sunday School Presidencies until McConkie became the Sunday School Superintendent, what is now known as the General Sunday School President. He seemed to be the one who felt that women should be the exception and not just an option. As far as I can tell, by 1980 there were no longer any sister Sunday School Presidents in the USA, although there would have been those who had served in such callings within living memory.

Initially, I would suggest the idea that most of the gospel teaching that takes place in the home is done by the Moms is a stereotype based on a narrow definition of teaching, particularly based on the age range of the children. In fact, if that is the case, the family is dysfunctional and failing, and that should be a major focus in the ward. Research done by the Catholic Church has even shown the father being key in the adoption of faith by the children. It's fine in a large ward to create new callings and spread the work, but the reality is that this concept is fully covered in the existing program. I think the key in this discussion is less creating the Teacher Advisors, but more the actual fulfillment of the program - such as the Teacher Councils for parents. The target for organizing these is the Ward Council - where it really should be, as those address key priesthood and RS concerns. It's particularly key in wards that are in demographically challenged areas and struggle with enough leadership to function. It is the process that is key rather than who is doing it.
@brettmajeske3525
@brettmajeske3525 Ай бұрын
It is interesting that when exploring the history of the Sunday School program, particularly in Areas where there is not enough Priesthood holders, women have served as Sunday School Presidents. The handbook, at least back in the 90s when I served my mission in France, stated that Priesthood holders was preferred, but that councilors must be the same gender so if a women was President so would be any councilors. Missionaries often served as Branch Presidency councilors, back then. During my mission instruction from the Brethren changed, so that Missionaries were not supposed to continue serving in the Branch Presidencies, and that Sunday School Presidents should hold the Priesthood whenever possible. At the time the Branch President was from Paris, and his adult son who lived with him was the Elder's Quorum President. They were in effect the only active Priesthood in the Branch. There were many single mother's and part member families, so while there were fifty kids in Primary, there was no local Priesthood. The Sunday School President was the widow of the original Branch President from when the Branch was organized. At the time of her release she had been Sunday School President for close to 20 years. With her release the Stake ended up sending a second family from Paris to the Branch every Sunday. Since the Branch leadership was only in town on Sunday, the Relief Society President was the only Branch leader in the town during the week.

I love the call for increased interfaith involvement from our members. I joined the Scouting profession in 2015 and in my first week we had to have our staff meeting in the high council room of a near by stake center (offered to us while our AC was being repaired) I soon learned even in scouting we had a clear divide in the scouting we do in the church and that of our neighbors in the community. There is so much misinformation about the conclusion of the charter partnership with the church (not of the church’s doing…thus the 20 month period for transition) I think most members miss the opportunity to return to their community leadership role in scouting (definitely need that relationship based approach we have in LDS living for leadership) and use our precious time in the church to focus on the covenant path which makes for a great builder of bridges for the gathering of Israel (e.g. country service Alma 48:17 and Church service Alma 48:19)

I did notice the prophets say before I go down to my death I know I have taught you so your blood and sins are not on my garments . So if this is on men all men with priesthood Gezz that’s a lot to put on anyone . I don’t really see men doing this much . But then what about when it says in as much as parents have children in Zion and teach them not the doctrines . The sin be on the parents head . So that would be on the woman the mother too . My PB says keep yourself clean and unspotted from the sins of the world by going to church and partaking of the sacrament . It is so hard to understand why women say you are clean and then men say you must become clean . I think I’m understanding it through their priesthood . That is a big responsibility . To help others come to Christ . I just don’t trust men that much unless you are a prophet or apostle . How about a father who does not lead his family in the right ways ?

I was surprised that this topic and interview resonated with me so much. I think the work being done in this arena is a great idea for several reasons. I've wondered for years why we don't make our building info and meeting times more accessible to anyone doing a regular internet search. As I've traveled internationally with my wife and kids, it's sometimes been difficult to easily find accurate info. The Meetinghouse Locator is a good tool but depending on the situation, we've had trouble finding places to attend to church. As a business owner, I took the responsibility to do many of these tasks for my business locations and saw the benefits. Now, as a recently called member of the High Council with responsibility for the facilities in our Stake, I would like to help make this happen for our local buildings. How can I contact Paul for more information? I just did a Google search for "churches near me" and although I live five houses away from our chapel in Mapleton Utah, the first result is a different Christian denomination in a nearby town. There are probably 20 chapels closer than that one. Our actual chapel doesn't even show up in the top 10 results, (and maybe not at all). It would be beneficial to improve this.
