Pats pick usage upsets me as a guitarist for 5 decades...too much pick on string..but I understand he is striking nylon strings ...forgive me.

Amazing to see Pat so young and modest. He stayed modest but became a great musician in the mean time.

I'm assuming putting Pat on 12 string probably made it easier to pitch the idea to the great Goodrick. How could Burton resist not integrating Pat's sensitivity and melodic sense? By '77 they made the great Passengers album, with Pat only on guitar, playing outstanding rhythm and lead with that blossomed ECM-engineered sound on his hollow-body 6 string ES175.

The pre concert interview here is actually a wonderful bonus. So thanks for uploading ALL OF IT. But…the concert itself begins at 10:17! BTW - 5:50 -> The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Nominating Committee would have been wise to pay attention to what Gary had to say here about genres of music.

This is indeed a historical video. Pat Metheny‘s development during these early years from a kid on a 12 string to his first own album with his legendary Gibson guitar and his own distinctive style is breath taking. The significant influence of Gary Burton is also obvious. Thank you so much for sharing. I follow Pat Metheny since 50 years and still he is my number 1 musician after all these years especially because of his development and individual style he developed during those years.

I love this as a Pat Metheny fan. Being a bassist, I love it even more for early documentation of Steve Swallow on electric bass!! Plus, Mick Goodrick and Bob Moses!! Kudos to Gary Burton! Also, they played half of the tunes in first Real Book. 😅

Good memories! I was there for their show in Vienne of the same tour. The bill was shared by the Chick Corea Electric band. Now guess who Pat Metheny trio invited as a guest ? Michael Brecker! how about an all star evening.

Excellent interview. First heard Gary Burton in 67 on THe Mike Douglas Show. Burton a tremndous talent. Became a follower then. Larry Coryell was the guitarist then, a super talent also.

Everytime this material is uploaded it’s always missing Gary’s between-song banter. I’m so curious to hear that. It must exist. And how Mick and Bob should have also been interviewed. We miss a lot by not hearing from them.

Yeah, I read in an interview w/ Pat, he said he'd spend basically the whole afternoon and evening prior to each gig w/ the guitar, tuning it and making sure it was in tune by show time but my guess is once they hit the stage and the first down beat occurred, it would not last very long.
@uberjam-sam851217 күн бұрын
Wow this is so precious. Metheny at age 19, at the very beginning, on an electric 12 string! already with that unmistakable Metheny tone that has enchanted us for 5 decades. Gary Burton is such a treasure and it's great hearing Mick Goodrich too.
