Thank you so much for taking the opportunity to educate, by using Paris is burning and “POSE” to highlight LGBTQIA figures struggles as well as their accomplishments. Although many of the mannerisms and idioms from black queer culture has made itself into mainstream, there tends to be a practice of not paying homage to the source; especially when it comes to ballroom as an inspiration. Thanks for acknowledging this!!!!!!!

This is amazing information! Thank you for your work. I can't believe Paris was so significant to the history and the doc itself but that information was just totally left out. People were so curious about the title's meaning and the doc just never bothered to explain.

You should do more of these style videos. It could be other LGBTQ people in real life who were featured in movies or TV.

I love you for posting this. Paris Is Burning is such an inspiring movie. I've watched it with so many family members. All of the people in the ballroom scene were and are incandescent.

14:02 I don’t believe that pose had a colorism problem, I think that pose accurately represented the positioning of dark skin and light skin people within the community and accurately represented what we genuinely go through. It held up a hard mirror to society and showed us what we actually look like and how we treat ourselves. I think the issue that the audience had with the colorism on pose was because it was a direct reflection of what we see in society in real life.which, successfully, was the point of the show. I’m not saying that dark skin people are inherently more aggressive, but what I’m saying is the darker skin people have a more inherent surface level defense mechanism because they’re treated more by society. So their defense mechanism is more apparent.

1:19 it still angers me to this day that Junior LeBeija is the only cast member from Paris is burning to not get a one on one interview. But has the most iconic lines from the movie! He is literally the narrator of the movie and only has one direct to camera moment and it’s flyby

Not entirely. Her character is based on a few different girls but her modeling story line is a direct reference to Tracy Africa, who was a successful model who had her career and reputation ripped out of her hands because somebody at Ebony or Jet Magazine found out that she was trans. Look her up. If you were around then you will recognize her
