Very good informations. I would add that it is the two federal swiss schools (ETHZ/EPFL) compete with the best American universities and OxBridge but with tuition fees of 1,750 USD/year. An advantage in Lausanne where the cost of living is 30% cheaper than in Zurich. Certainly the best country to study science and technology at an international level almost for free.

Hey Abir, thanks for sharing your story. I'm 2.5 years into a software dev job in mtl and making 70k$. Salary is shit so I applied to MILA to do a masters in AI. I got accepted, but it starts in august. Do you think I should apply to other jobs in the meanwhile? Should I stick my current job? Should I focus on projects on the side? Any tips would be strongly appreciated. Thanks!
@abirabbas894 ай бұрын
You should always be sending out a few job applications and browsing job postings regardless of your situation. Take a few interviews a month, even if you’re happy with your current situation. The way I look at it is, nobody is gonna wait to give you the right opportunity, you need to consistently do things to build a pipeline of opportunities you can pick from. Also having a job offer also doesn’t mean you need to accept it, if your situation dictates that it’d be better to stay, just reject them.

Thought the job market in 2020-2021 was great for software engineers. Btw what do you think of the job market now for new grads?
@abirabbas894 ай бұрын
2021 for sure, but 2020 was brutal because of lockdowns and uncertainty. Honestly the market for new grads right now is pretty tough, most companies are looking to hire seniors so you really have to standout either true co-ops/internships or side projects.
@Admiral93944 ай бұрын
@@abirabbas89 guess I got 2020 mixed up with 2021 lol. but yeah heard the market been brutal since for new grads since late 2022. One last question can a truly impressive side projects make up for a lack of internship/coop at the moment?
@abirabbas894 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely, in my case my side project ended up on my resume as work experience. Because I actually treated the project as a startup, built out the MVP and launched it to real customers. So the recruiters treated me as if I had 2 years of experience straight out of school. But as you mentioned it has to be truly impressive, not some to-do app clone from a youtube tutorial

While I've used a lot of different frameworks, the most profitable and lucrative one is the following: Cloud Provider: AWS IaaS: Terraform Backend: Express.js Frontend: React Containerization: Docker The best roadmap I'd recommend you follow is to build a product from scratch, think of a cool project idea. Start building from absolutely 0, leverage KZbin, StackOverflow, ChatGPT to learn understand and build. You'll end up incorporating all the technologies I mentioned above.

i can tell you my opinion from the view of a graphic designer, and specifically, as a ui ux designer, i started my life at 12 y.o by editing pictures, taking them, and then moved to working with layers and different tools... even i had no pc, but doing that using the phone, for no financial goal was extremely enjoyable for me.., but i was also obssesed with the computer and mathematics.. which led me to be obssesed with somehting in between... UI UX Design...but the porblem is that goals changed.. views changed..which causes for me a big problem... it's a massive subject to talk about.... maybe i don't understand all what you're trying to communicate.. but i truly feel it.. and i want to discuss it more with you if we could have an online conversation using any tool if you would like i'll be so happy to discuss this subject with someone with same case: here's my whatsup number: +213781708065 just send me a message and i'll reply.. or just drop your number and i'll send you peace :)

advice like this feeds into a vicious cycle. "Exaggerate your experience" forces companies into a process to try and figure out what experience people really need to be competent at the positions they are trying to fill.
@abirabbas895 ай бұрын
Sure, but what would you recommend to folks who are struggling to land jobs because others are doing this? People have their livelihoods on the line, so they don’t have the luxury to sit around and wait for the industry to change
@willstikken56195 ай бұрын
@@abirabbas89 What you are saying here is that accuracy doesn't matter. Integrity doesn't matter, and as long as they land a job they may be unqualified for then the ends justify the means. None of that is true. My advice to people in the situation you described is to: 1) Stop looking to these silly KZbin videos for advice on your job search. 2) Look at your experience and skills objectively rather than wishfully. 3) If you have to lie to get a job then either you are not qualified for the position or the company is not competent enough hire correctly and you probably do not want to work for them anyway.
@abirabbas895 ай бұрын
@@willstikken5619 I politely disagree, you can be qualified for a job and still lose it to a candidate who oversold themselves. This is bound to happen and is human nature. It's not because of my videos that this is happening, it's just the way of the world. If you'd like to live in ignorance and act like we live in a utopia, feel free to do so.
@willstikken56195 ай бұрын
@@abirabbas89 Seems the politeness was lost after he first line. There is nothing ignorant nor utopian about my position. When people follow your advice based on supposition they not only place themselves at risk but they drag down both their coworkers and their employer. The problem of employers asking for absurd levels of experience is not going to be fixed by playing these silly games nor are you likely to find yourself in a tenable position when you do. If you really think this is the way to attack the problem then you should be telling people to be clear and realistic about their experiences and to try and communicate that clearly rather than telling them to lie and inflate their numbers on the silly notion that it will all be OK. You are simply offering people poor advice.
@abirabbas895 ай бұрын
@@willstikken5619 I'm sure your experience is different but from my past experience, this isn't the case. Recruiters are not technical folks, its becoming harder and harder to stand out. No where in the video do I mention to fabricate experience, I'm simply asking to create a story around their experience that will help them land roles. This could mean leaving out certain pieces and only including certain pieces. Unfortunately we do not live in a society where being 100% honest and upfront will guarantee success. This isn't my advice, this is the current situation in the industry and I'm simply informing my audience.

Not everyone can be directors with USD600k pr year after 12 years experience…Unrealistic…
@abirabbas895 ай бұрын
There's always exception to every rule. My main point is some recruiters expectations are through the roof. They're asking for 2+ years of experience for juniors, and 12+ for Seniors. The funniest one I've seen is 15 years of experience in React while Reacts only been out for under a decade...
