Don't you find the bugle-head screws tend to tear out the pocket hole? (I absolutely agree, you don't have to use pocket hole screws, I just try to make sure I'm using some kind of washer head screws)

thats a pretty good point, i have had this problem but i found that by clamping the pieces together first i can put less pressure and then they dont tend to tear out so much

Not a great way to make a furnace. It won't last you very long. The king of random made this years ago. This is how I made my first furnace and it lasted 1 melt.
