The pipe and the drum seem to me to be the most primal instruments. You can whistle and bang things. It comes naturally as a preset.
@donswearingen98057 күн бұрын
You're right. The drum and the flute are the first instruments. They have bone whistle back at least 12,000 years.

This was fascinating. Thank you so much for making this video. I am someone who wants to learn to play the harp at am point zero at the moment. So hard to find a teacher and a second hand harp that I can afford. Your harps are beautiful and something to aspire to. Best wishes from Suffolk in England.

I’m informed that during the medieval period, pipers were despised, deemed lazy and harbingers of ill omen? 🤔

Historical harps really are a completely different instrument and absolutely lovely. And the wire-strung Irish harps are stunners. They sound like a bell choir!

Super cool playing! I want to get into this now ;-)... as to the archeology... wouldn't they have just used two loose three holed pipe-and-tabor pipes, without the interconnection? Or simply tied them together as needed?

From early medieval graves in the Carpathian Basin - from the Avar Khaganate, we got some archaeological data about doubleflute :)

Do you have a source for the sheet music for this song? I picked up a dulce-duo from Susato as a basic starter and would love to learn the song played at the end of the video
@GalwayEarlyMusic19962 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrew, You can get the sheet music here: www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=11161. It's not specifically for double flute, but you have the two lines of music from the manuscript there. Have fun!

I play a pipe Chanter that was made to attach and detach to a bag and I use synthetic reeds. It is for the Irish Uilleann pipes, but it can be played two ways, both in cross fingering and open fingering, like an whistle. The highland pipes even has an open fingering but it is easier to cross finger because of how it is designed.

This is fantastic! Thank you for making and posting. Why were Irish harpers not allowed in the city?
@GalwayEarlyMusic19963 жыл бұрын
Hi Padme, We're glad you enjoyed the video tour. in the 16th century harpers were considered possible spies, because they travelled everywhere and could easily bring messages and information to the Irish who were resisting the English conquest of Ireland. That's why they were not welcome in the city, as it was an English city at the time.

Where can I buy some of these that do not cost thousands?
@GalwayEarlyMusic19963 жыл бұрын
Dear Pistis, we'll refer this query to Jacopo Bisagni. Because they are not widely played, they are made to order by craftsmen - that's why they tend to be so expensive!
