I am an Ag Teacher, mainly Ag Mechanics, I have a random problem that started a year ago with my 2016 6.7L. Truck has 135k and has Lucas fuel treatment every 3rd tank of fuel if not sooner. When on a trip longer than an hour, pulling or not, but mainly when pulling a trailer, the engine would momentarily cut out "cough", but never triggered a CEL code. Started in Dec of 23 and did it 6 or 7 times to April of 24. I don't daily drive the truck a lot at the present. We mainly use it for pulling ranch equipment or when I have to use my truck to haul students show animals and projects. The last time it "coughed" it did it hard about 4 times consecutively. I pulled off at the next exit and shut down the truck and found the engine had more oil in it than it should. So I did an oil change in the parking lot of Bass Pro Shops. I captured 3.5 gallons of oil and diesel. Fuel has to be entering through the pump shaft seal as the truck does not smoke, has never been allowed to short cycle a regen, and runs perfectly otherwise. The engine was 2500 miles on that oil change from December. Took it easy on the way to our destination, and it "coughed" 2 more times. Checked the oil and it was not significantly higher. Ran the truck to a local shop, they kept it a week and couldn't get it to act up. Picked the truck up and had it "cough" on the way to my ranch about 2 months later. Dropped it off at another shop out there and they had the truck for 3 weeks, could not make the engine duplicate the issue. While there, they pulled the sensor off the CP4 pump to make sure it wasn't failing. No metal found, and nothing present on the pcm. After talking with a former student who is a Diesel Tech he said he had never seen one puke fuel out the CP4 shaft seal without throwing a CEL Code of some kind. Working blind he would replace the fuel pressure relief valve on the drivers fuel rail. I replaced it with an amazon should work part, finally get a code of P228F, scan tool suggested changing the valve or the pressure sensor. So I picked up the pressure sensor from Ford. Still get a P228F Fuel Pressure Regulator 99 Exceeded Learning Limits-Too High. I figure the valve is a reject and will be getting another replacement. When I replaced the valve I also changed the fuel filters. On the wrong side of the primary filter I found a small brown algae worm in the bottom of the inside of the fuel filter. Now I notice that I hear the pump running way more than it should and I know the filter base is all the way home not bleeding air. Should the electric pump have a check valve on the intake line from the tank? If it does and was bad could that cause some or all of this issue? I am meticulous about my trucks mechanical maintenance. I have to be since I have to use it for school trips, hauling show animals and ag mech projects. This is driving me nuts.

If you can hear your pump working then it’s got power correct? Because right now I’m having a crank no start issue and even after doing the whole 30 second on and off thing to purge air from the system I got no fuel in the rear filter , so I’m guessing the lift pump is bad. I can hear it running and it isn’t screaming but no fuel at the rear filter.

@@dylanware2424 this can be more complicated If you have lift pump pressure and volume the issue is on the high pressure side. I would start by checking for contamination by removing the high rail pressure control Valve and look for contamination. You can also remove the volume control valve from the injection pump. Do that first before going after the injectors

Hi, got a 2020 ram 5500. I was on my way home from my trip. My truck stalled like 2-3 times. When driving, truck throws check engine light and there's no throttle response, as soon as that happened i pulled over and right before i stop the truck just stalls. when i try starting it back up, it turns over but doesn't start until 20- 30 min with few tries. I changed my fuel filters, same thing is happening. It seems like its something electronic. I checked the codes, I'm getting P0091 and U010E. Has anyone ever had this happen? Thanks

This really helps to see things you can’t otherwise see when the engine is installed. I have a suspect rear main seal. Where would oil leak and collect? I have oil coming from above the filter up near the starter? This seems pretty high up for oil to leak out. If the CCV is replaced will a leak reduce/diminish? If you have a video on this scenario that would be great. Thank you

I tried diving into it but not sure the best way to get to it with the engine still in the truck because of where it sits. When the code was read it suggested replacing that, anything else I should check or rule out? Engine performance has been unchanged, and code has been intermittent but recently becoming more consistently on.

Hi, Tony This vids are pure gold. Please keep going on these, please. However I have a question. Somewhere at 21:14 of this video a regen progress is under 600s which means it is in process. DPF load 47%, which means there is soot to burn. However EGT14 (which as you mentioned is located right after DPF) temp readings are lower then any EGTs before DPF. So or 1) no regeneration/burning, 2) EGT14 is located somewhere down the exhaust stream (in this case more likely EGT11 is one before DPF and EGT12 right after). Can you please comment on it?
@dieseltalkwithtonysalas8725

Sorry been slammed and teaching next few days The temp after the DPF should be warmer after since it’s supposed to be burning the suit, however in this recording, I’m not sure if I had taken it right at the beginning or at the end or somewhere during the regeneration so I’m sorry if it’s not accurate, but to be clear, what should happen after the DPF is a higher temperature since that indicates that suit is burninghope that clears it up but when I get a second, I will try to review the video and give you a better accurate answer
