“Old brown (dried up) sheaths can still produce flowers, don"t cut or disturbed them, let them fall off in their own good time, sometimes buds form in these and because they have dried they become hard, you need to keep a eye on these if buds try to grow as they will find it hard to push out of these, a little helping hand will help at this time by carefully pulling apart the dried sheath, be crefull at this point not to pull the sheath apart to far, just enough to let the new buds out. As for the darkness....well in the wild where Catt's grow it does tend to get dark, not having a go at you, just try to think how these grow in the wild and treat your's the same way, this is hard if your climate isn't the same as in the wild so you have to try and make it as close as possible in your situation.” This is from an orchid forum.
@PC-zg3eo23 күн бұрын
Be patient. Do not squeeze or manipulate the sheath in any way. Some Cattleya orchids are like that. If you remove the dry stuff there is no protection for anything that could develop. I have an orchid that is doing the same thing, this morning I notice that there was something coming up.

Thanks, I use medium that easiIy available, I try to water every week and fertilize with half the recommended dosage every time I water. The temperature here is on average 80 degrees celsius year round.

I used to purchase orchids from Hauserman’s years ago via mail order. They are big in the hybridization of Cattleyas. They had extensive greenhouse damage but never rebuilt. They have a nursery somewhere in Florida, I don’t know if they still own this place. At 16:09, the morning phalaenopsis grew a terminal spike. It will never grow from that area again. Sometimes it will throw a basal keiki.
@nicholeamair36433 ай бұрын
Yes they do as cattleya’s were the only species they had in flask and so far mine are doing great. I’m glad I got from them. Thanks for info on fl I’ll check it out. Yes also the area did seem smaller than the maps I saw on display of the number of greenhouses they have. I’ve never seen such a terminal spike on a phal 🙂 so interesting…

gl with them. new roots and new growth are a good sign. Over time if some don't want to produce new roots you might want to investigate what could be causing them stress. You might be thinking nothing could be causing them stess. you are giving them all they need and I'd agree as I'm sure you are but I have found many causes of stress to my orchids over time despite giving them all they need. Sometimes it can take months to discover the cause. Sometimes you will never figure it out. I will share what has caused my orchids to be stressed above all else in my collection if you are interested: It was bugs. And like I hinted it can take months to spot them sometimes. The most effective way I found with my plants would be to wait till it was completely dark. Then go around with a torch and shine a light on an orchid that you suspect is stressed. You mainly want to investigate the surface of the orchid media. Gently blow on the surface of the substrate and carefully see if anything moves. Sometimes you are looking for things that will be 1/10th the size of an ant. Generally whatever it is, and I have come across all sorts by now, will be most active at night, they hate the light so will start to crawl when disturbed either by the light or by someone blowing on them. I'd keep repeating this step weekly if you do not discover anything either till new roots form or you do discover something. If it helps at all. I'm sure most will be fine but you'd be surprised how many different types of bugs I have discovered with the nightly torch routine that would otherwise go completely unnoticed.

Thank you so much Tommy for this insight, I never thought of it. I will go through with my flashlight... Also, Do you think I could also spray for insects at night? since they are out at that time? @tomfurnby88 Sorry for my delayed response...
@tomfurmby884 ай бұрын
@@nicholeamair3643 Hi, you can treat at night sure. But you will probably have to keep re-treating any affected plant. Sadly one treatment is hardly ever enough and when you treat won't make that much difference. Systemic sprays that the plant absorbs and thus poisons the bugs when they chew on the plant are most effective but also harmful to us so always use protective equipment - glasses, gloves. There are lots of different treatment methods. I am not an expert on what works well. Maybe get some advice from a local orchid nursery near you - one that grows orchids, not just sells them so you know what works for them.
