Hi Olie, loving the channel. That engine seems to be the serpentine engine which was fitted to the later soft dash RRCs and Disco 1s. Also after this they lost the distributor in favour of coil packs... also 4 fewer head bolts on each side which if you look on the heads you can see the old spaces for them between the spark plugs. This incarnation had the superior oil pump design. When the time comes, look into a Petronix LU-181A ignition module and do away with all the old lucas crap. Personally I prefer the serpentine design, I can see why you want to keep the authenticity but being a 3.9 I would have preferred the serp setup. Great content I always love watching anything to do with these old classics :-)

Hiya! Yes. We’re pretty sure it’s actually a 4 litre now.. it’s had some weird expensive components fitted at some point. The front cover is a strange one as it’s a crank driven pump like you say but also takes a distributor! Either way I’m happy with how it’s now coming out. It’s in the engine bay now! I can’t remember if I’m running points of electronic ignition at the moment. Not sure which distributor I bought!

You dont time up the engine with the flywheel locking pin?

No need to on the TDCI. The pump is not timed the tool is just to replicate the tension that’s lost when the pump is removed. You need to lock the flywheel on the TDDI

In my opinion, using a copper/hide hammer AND a bit of wood makes it much harder work; too much shock absorption going on. I often use a club hammer with wood to cushion the blow and haven't broken anything with that set up yet (unless I miss or forget the wood). The copper/hide should tap the bearing on just fine without the wood and won't damage anything in the process. But hey I could be wrong and better safe than sorry. I've hit less sturdy things into place with bare metal hammers and heavy bits of pipe and whatnot, you just need to know the line between impact driving and smashing!
@Automotiveolie
@Automotiveolie 3 ай бұрын
Annoyingly it was the heaviest hammer I had and I just like to be double sure it’s not going to distort or nick any surface. In an ideal world I’d use a press of some description

@@Automotiveolie Olie, I need some help! I couldn't beat the bloody yoke off of the splines! They are so seized on, I tried heating and beating and all sorts, and I just can't separate the yoke off of the splines. Destroyed the old carrier while attempting so now I am really in a bind! I tried to use the bolt that holds in the horseshoe washer to lever off, then tried to hammer a thick chisel in between the bolt and the yoke to see if that would work, but instead of separating the splines it sent the bolt back into its thread but without even turning! The bolt I am not worried about, can somehow get it out and tap a new thread once it's apart, but I CAN'T GET IT APART AAAAH HELP ME
@Automotiveolie
@Automotiveolie 6 ай бұрын
Ouch. That sounds like a complete mess. Have you soaked it all in penetrating fluid? Have you tried attaching the yoke to an anchor point and yanking the prop ( almost like a slide hammer motion ) another option is to get a friend to help using two hammers beat the yoke at the same time so it evenly has force to move. It will come off. It wants to come off you just need to beat the thing into submission. I’ve had a few stubborn ones before but they always come off.
@innocuouspseudonym509
@innocuouspseudonym509 6 ай бұрын
@@Automotiveolie It was a mess! I set about it again this morning and with enough heat and about an hour of hammering she came off! Had it soaking in penetrating fluid overnight but I don't think that did anything, it was just sheer heat and impact in the end. Thank god you encouraged me to beat off! As a consequence of my furious beating, a new chapter has opened: I think I deformed the yoke a bit and a UJ that was already a bit stiff (probably why the carrier failed) has become too stiff to run nicely, so now there's lots of vibration! Ah, fun.

Why did you use a brush to paint the axle and stuff and then a spray can for the frame? Why not brush on both? What's the name of the stuff that you brushed on? It didn't look like you removed all of the surface rust prior to brushing it on, I guess that's fine? I'd like to clean up the underside of my Rover.
@Automotiveolie
@Automotiveolie 7 ай бұрын
The short answer is because the paint I brushed on is designed for metal requiring no prep, you can even paint it directly onto rust if you want. If I’d had the money and time I’d have taken the body off the chassis, blasted all components etc. the stone chip i sprayed on the chassis and body components is a hard wearing rubberised coating which goes on uniformly with aerosol and wouldn’t look right on the running gear. It wasn’t a 100k restoration more of a build which kept the look as original and useable without breaking the bank.

Like a wow-wow-wow-wow-wow. Any ideas? The faster and faster I go it is still there but the noise seems to fade into the background.
@Automotiveolie
@Automotiveolie 7 ай бұрын
Hi, ok so is your transit FWD or RWD? The FWD transits have an intermediate bearing on the drive shaft which can give you the noise you’re experiencing. Failing that it could be a faulty bearing, worn brake disc or noisy gearbox. First thing to do is get it jacked up and see if you have any play in the wheel bearing and then the service life of your brakes and keep working back untill you discover the noise! Always here to help so if you need more guidance drop a comment. Cheers 👏
