Thanks Tommy .... I knew that some of those names in the photographs were a bit of a 'guess'. I had asked around, but, apart from Barbara Stock (before she died in America a few years ago), and my own fading memories, I couldn't get any information from anyone. I don't want to make changes to, and re-load, the video, so I will leave it there ..... and hope that your comment is enough of a correction for anyone else who sees it. Any other comments and correction from folk are gratefully received. Best wishes. Eddie

Brilliant piece of work Eddie. This brings back so many memories. I too was born and lived in Cowper St (no's 33 then 31 then back to 33) from 1957 to 1975. I went to the Lifeboys and later the BB where I played the bugle (so badly I was asked to "just pretend" whenever we played in the hall). I'm probably one of the freshly scrubbed kids in the church photos. Just for your records the woman you have as "Mrs Harvey" in the photos of 48:21 and 48:51 is actually my aunty (Joyce McMichael) who, believe it or not, is Joyce Burgess of the photo at 21:20 ! The little girl in the photo at 48:21 being held by "aunty Nellie" is Joyce's daughter (my cousin) Jean. Thanks for a great video Tommy McMichael

thank you for these fantastic videos. At 30min in you show a tensor T with staggered indices. eg you write {T^m}_n rather then T^m_n with the indices directly above each other. I am trying to understand what the staggered indices tell me. if the tensor is the product of two vectors V^m and W_n, then {T^m}_n=V^m x W_n and {T_n}^m =W_n x V^m ie the stagerred indices indicate the order of multiplication, is this correct? Is there other information the staggered indices tell you, is it important to stagger the indices or would just writing them directly above each other as in T^m_n be normally sufficient?

Dear prof. Boyes. Your lectures on GR are the best one can expect. The step by step approach, the patience during explanations and the great didactic ability, make the learning process become wonderful expireince. If i may express my opinion as a Phd. In physics teaching, these lectures deserve to be transformed into a great book, better than many others on the same subject. Thank you.

Selamlar.

Excellent series! Thank you! The contravariant and covariant components and the lowering indices made sense for the first time. Now I am all confused about the many places in which there seems to be a need for a dual vector space with a set of dual basis vectors, etc.

Thank you for these videos. As a former physics student revisiting GR years later they are really a wonderful resource. A note about the discussion of vectors at the end - the way I learned them was to use unit vectors, so in this case it would be an “r hat” vector, where “r hat” is a unit vector pointing radially outward from the center of the earth. That way you get vector equations without having the cubic term in the denominator of the force equation as you pointed out.

Why do you have row vectors equating column vectors when using a change of basis matrix from contravariant to covariant vectors?

There is no stationary anything any more than there is no single velocity. All velocities are infinitely relative, which is exactly like saying, they don't exist. Acceleration is agreed upon by all observers, gravity is focused at a center, and somehow these absolute conditions are subordinate to velocity. That's so human. You've created the Earth-centered-Universe narcissism again, only this time, it's the observer, because every time an observer changes speed, the entire Universe of relative conditions changes to suit the observer's perspective. Math can lie to you. You CANNOT show me dimensions 1 or 2, and time is in your head "believing" the math. Transform equations adjust these fake math ideas to CREATE "c". Look at my gyro explanation -BASIC mechanics, and you got it wrong letting math dictate CAUSE to you.

Just beyond belief! Wonderfully expressed, I love how you subtly hammer home the points to guide people away from the restrictions of geometry learned from a black board! " Be very careful what you put into that mind for you will never get it out!".
