Ferngrove is also known as being part of the "Dickie Bird" estate, due to most of the streets being named after birds. With it being the roughest estate in Bury, many would have argued they should have bulldozed all of it.

Eden-field definitely. Bury can vary depending on the local speaker. The problem was that the housing estate was short sightedly built either side of the reserved route. It was always going to be severed. This leads to a climbing lane that is far too late going up the hill to be of much use. The whole of the M60 route was protected way back in the 1950s and some properties were demolished in the late 1970s for it, even though the ring wasn't completed until over twenty years later.

@@UK.RoadsCyclingandTransport The only bit that was a sticking point was the cross-Pennine section. Many options were presented, including a surface road, a tunnel, reusing the Woodhead tunnels and a cutting, and all were rejected. The Woodhead tunnels I can accept, they'd never have been good enough, but the overground options were blocked because it's the Peak District and it wasn't allowed, and nobody wanted to foot the bill for a new tunnel - a fact proved by just how crap the Stocksbridge Bypass is compared to what was planned, and the fact they built it to such a low standard that even the sections that could be turned into a motorway (or at least a half decent dual carriageway) can't without completely redesigning the existing grade separated junctions. Of course, none of this excuses the utter clusterfuck of Mottram Junction or the bypass that has been lobbied for by the locals for at least as long as I've been alive (I'm 53). They've finally relented and have started to build something, but it's only going to dump the traffic in Tintwistle, which it goes through already and isn't really resolving the issue for anyone except the residents of Mottram. And they're making it worse by STILL offloading the M67 onto the roundabout instead of using the slip roads that are pretty much ready to bolt on to. I still find it odd that the only thing linking the two largest cities in the North is a piddly single carriageway

1:23 Interesting shot of the junction of the A40 Westway and the short lived, shortest motorway in the country, the M41. Meant to be the link between the bottom of the M1 and via the M4 right down to the A3/M3, the people of West London whose bedrooms (& homes & streets, parks and cemeteries) were at risk put a stop to it You can still see the old White City dog track/Empire Exhibition stadium top left too. Prescott sneakily downgraded it to an A road overnight with scant warning. Result: tens of thousands of Pounds in speeding fines from the new 50mph limit.

As far as ( am concerned the Motorway numbering in this area is wrong. The part of the m'way NW of Manchester is the M62 as the through route. It should at least be marked M60/M62. The section of Motorway over Barton Bridge was originally M62, then M63 and then M60.. ...
@leopold7562
@leopold7562 22 күн бұрын
You're not wrong, but it's an issue that wouldn't have existed if the second motorway span had been built. This was going to run from just west of the Eccles interchange (J12) and follow the route of the existing motorway until just east of Simister Island (J18). It would have had three junctions in total, not counting the start and end points, which were with the M61, the (unbuilt) M601 and the M66. This would've made for a proper cross-country motorway and left the existing stretch through the Irwell Valley, with all its horrible junctions, as a provincial stretch which would've formed the M60 (or whatever they'd planned to call it then). It would also have cut out the confusing and nasty Eccles Interchange, which is only confusing and nasty because the M62 to Livepool was originally the M54 and would have taken up what is now the M602 as well - but unfortunately it was already built before someone had the brainwave of a cross country motorway. The M601, incidentally, was going to be the Prestwich Bypass and was the reason for the missing junction number for all those years. That would've headed into North Manchester and terminated at the proposed inner ring motorway, which also thankfully never got built. Apologies if you already knew all that...

@@UK.RoadsCyclingandTransport The reason is that they don't care about traffic flow. They just put blanket 40mph speed limits whenever there's any type of roadworks. This works for whoever is managing that section of motorway because they don't need to think about it, and it works for the government at large who are trying to annoy us into giving up our cars. And then the roadworks are in place for several years because you never see any workers there, and we're left holding the short end of the stick.
