Return to Forever Romantic Warrior was the first time I heard him, and his drumming on that is mesmerizing, as well as everyone else on that record! Still blows my mind to this day, and I saw the show back then after it released and again at the re-union tour! My son was with me for the latter show and I had to help him pick his jaw up off the floor!

so how many bands have drummers led. how many albums under their own name have they recorded. factor his work with chic , miles, and freddie hubbard and legions of others? the man is a living legend with a style and sound utterlty unique. if you close your eyes and listen , his taste and approach to sound is incredible. he hasnt for years been known as a certain kind of soloist and yet years ago was. NO ONE sounds like him. just try and youll see how hard that is to accomplish. his work with Geri Allen and Wallace Roney is awesome and huge. i love his solos . big washy and always lyrical.

SDG. "So Damn Good"- he was the reason I dug Primus so much. Les is great and all, but Tim's work was both tasteful and bad-ass at the same time.

We went to a show in downtown Fresno way back when and a band from the bay area, Laundry, opened the show. It was Herb's band! Herb stole the show. They cut him loose for a bathroom break and I've never seen like it, not before nor afterward. This man is beyond talented.

I remember listening to primus and a music teacher walked up and asked if I liked to be a drummer, I said “no I want to be a bassist like Les claypool” but ever since then I notice how amazing of a drum Tim in and why my teacher noticed the drums first before the bass. Tim has this amazing backbone to the band that when he left it felt weird without that crucial backbone

I can't even play that with one hand at a time, and now that I think about it, that might be harder due to the weird timing. Oh well, I'll learn to code instead.

A study in 5/4 time signature. My favorite drummer ever!
@kevinkirk4285

I think this is my new favorite drum solo. I dig 11/8 time signature. Counted like 6/8 time signature. Just alternate between 6/8 and 5/8 every other measure. Odd time signature was invented by a drummer because his guitarist could not count to four. LOL

I have to comment on this man… I know there’s drummers that are listening to this and hearing timing drift, going into a fill early and coming out late and you couldn’t be more wrong… In the 80s, I went to a drum clinic at a music store in Seattle, he did a test with the whole crowd that was in the store, he had them clap their hands to a close one second per clap timing… A friend of mine that worked at that store threw me a electronic metronome from behind the counter, which i set the volume down, but could see the LED in perfect sync with his clap.. Lenny started out with a simple kick drum in sync with everyone’s clap, Then he started throwing tricky time signatures immediately into the mix, and this went on for at least 3 to 4 minutes… When Lenny was done, he was tapping on his high hat, and said this is the time that you all should be clapping at … Long story short, everybody in the room were all clapping at different times, when I looked down at that metronome, it was exactly at the rate he was hitting that high hat… There was about 5 people that was standing next to me when I set that metronome, and they were dumbfounded… Lenny White you are one of the elite

I guess for me musicality trumps technique. Billy Cobham and Lenny White were two of the most inspired drummers I have seen, both open handed. Maybe it it an acquired taste. I have seen Buddy and other legends. I for one did not like traditional grip, never made a lot of sense to me, but it is classic. Vinnie Colaiuta and Steve Gadd use it and they are tops in my book.

He's a genius. To come up with his parts and play them flawlessly time and again is amazing. Sure someone could copy him, but it came up with them. That is much harder than it seems and he is a master at it.
