While the railroads are far from dead, steam engines are long gone....I grew up watching them from northern Portland, OR, where the main line passed through a natural 'cut' in the land. In the wintertime, my mother used to send me down by the tracks to pick up hunks of coal which had fallen from passing trains to use in our coal-burning stove.

Interesting family. Pete's father was a dedicated communist, socialist, whatever and following the manifesto's checklist he decided the way to attract the great unwashed was through their folk music. They had family connections to the music industry, got there "worker's struggles tunes " to a greater audience. Funny how things work out.

My mother's favourite singer. She did have a way with horses, with Beery's instructions. She taught her roan to rear just like in the Roy Rogers pictures.

I sat on Pete Seeger's lap as a 3 year old and I never forgot the experience. Ive been collecting, performing and teaching traditional folk music since I was in my Jr. High School days and I'm 84 now & still teaching and collecting. I'd say Pete was a great inspiration.
