Thank you for making this video. I first played The Cat Lady several years ago, 2016 or thereabouts, and it certainly changed how I see the medium of videogames. I adore that game. I had never thought of it as cathartic, but it very much is. You feel so refreshed after finishing the game, though "refreshing" is an odd description for the story. Thank you for your work.

I haven't played this game but I definetely will after watching this essay that you so wonderfully explained,I am a latina and I have always suffered with my menstruations, being both, emotionally draining and physically damaging, I find this completely fascinating, I think women in games are portrayed in just one way or another, either completely insane or sexually attractive,I think this game respects our time and at the same second, how wonderfully bittersweet is our lives, how strong, how weak, how we bleed throughout all of our lives without no one noticing a single thing, only when we scream out in pain,we are labeled insane. Another great game that puts this theme very well is Silent Hill 3 one of my favorite games, but it tackles something way more horrifying as teenage pregnancy and unwanted babies (Silent Hill 4 too) Thank you for sharing, sweetie.

Ok fine I'll watch that episode off DS9 again. (Also that episode really hit me in the feels. I knew that the prophets werent the ones torturing Sisko with the memories and he's the one leading them around in his mind but it still hits so hard when its revealed to him) Also that bat plush's face reenacting the scene is priceless. Also where do I get that bat

As a man, I’m not uncomfortable talking about female biology or childbirth, I just don’t think about it all that much, mostly because I have never and will never experience any of these issues things and it’s not my place to offer any opinions.

I feel like ariana is the most unappreciated character in bloodborne. She's one of only very few who will not try to kill you, under any circumstances. And on top of that she's actually quite a nice person. I also like how she isn't a belittling or demonising portrayal of a sex worker, as i feel like it is a very much misunderstood and disrespected profession. All of this makes it all the more sad that no matter what her story ends horribly.

she’s a noble woman, who maybe had some differing views on certain things, thus having that privilege taken and she became a woman who had to do what she had to do just to get by :(

I explored, explored, and explored this game and never considered this angle 😂 thanks for the video. Very enlightening to a dense man like me. My mom had 9 boys, no girls, so yeah I never heard much about girls upbringing and what women deal with biologically. Even as a man, there's still a lot I don't know or forget because I don't deal with it frequently

Okay, lemme preface my thoughts by stating: WANTING A CHILD IS NOT INHERENTLY A FEMININE OR MATERNAL THING. Men do want children too. So! I always assumed the Moon Presence was a female because of the way it reaches out to place the Hunter in Gehrman’s place after freeing him. What was a little unnerving to me was that only human female characters such as, Queen Yharnam, Arianna and Iosefka become pregnant meaning, the Great One that “blessed” them with a child was a Male Great One. In many cases mothers have a stronger connection to their children, and in many confirmed cases where mothers gain something called Hysterical Strength, causing them to go into fits and frantic episodes. I know my thoughts and explanations may fall flat, and I’m not even sure where I’m going with this, but it always got me with the way it grabs the Hunter thinking (she?) will gently reach out, embrace her new child and the Hunter will just be all obedient and watch over the dream. Until we, the player, having consumed the umbilical cords, show defiance against what is essentially our “Eldritch Mother” and ascend humanity.

This is a well put together and informative essay, kudos! This brought to light some themes I had only vaguely connected before. And while I still personally hold the opinion that menstruation/pregnancy are a little less important to the story as a whole (they're clearly present, but the way I see it they're more vessels to carry the message rather than a core message themselves), upon reflection I certainly agree they're more pivotal to the running themes than I'd previously thought. Again, props on this video! Very well put together, articulate, and logical.
