These are the post 1916 lyrics. The An Dord Féinne version. The original folk version made no mention of "Gráinne Mhaol" (the Irish pirate queen Grace O'Malley). Originally the song came about around the time of the Jacobite Rebellions in Scotland. The Irish supported the Jacobites and saw Bonnie Prince Charlie (A Catholic) as a friend to Ireland who would remove the English landlords from Ireland. The original was a song of welcoming Prince Charlie to Ireland.

It's origins are in the 1745 revolt in Scotland where Irish catholics were hoping for the Victory of Bonnie Prince Charlie for the British throne . The lyrics were changed by Patrick Pearse 100 odd years ago to celebrate an Irish pirate

@Cooper on my head ... It has been 100 years since Collins signed the Treaty... "“In my opinion, it gives us freedom, not the ultimate freedom that all nations desire.. but the freedom to achieve it.” By all means Cooper, tell us how the six counties are doing with their "freedom to achieve it".
