I had a 4001 about 1986 that was ripped off buy some A*&HOLE!, I now own a 4003 Mapleglo. My 4001 cost around $375 dollars used, my Mapleglo (new) cost about $1.300 dollars. Its appraised now at around $2.400 and is almost too valuable to risk playing out anywhere. Who knows how much more it'll be worth in twenty more years.

It may just be me, but one thing I noticed is no distinct way to place the players thumb if he or she is playing with their fingers. Are these models designed specifically with pick playing in mind or is it possible to play with fingers? I know you played with fingers in the video, but when you were playing on the E string I noticed you weren't really resting your thumb anywhere.

These things sound just as beautiful as they look. I would cry if I had the opportunity to play one, let alone OWN one. If I had only one song to play, it would be Something by The Beatles.

I totally agree, but that's not good because a: I really really want one now b: They're hard to get c: I can't afford it anyway. Thank you bassemporium for putting impossible dreams into my head!

I've had a 4001 Sunburst since 1977. Have played the heck out that Rick and no problems re. the lacquer on the fretboard. Did end up blowing the neck pick up one night during a gig.

No one can argue with that logic. Me being a bassist and Teamster for just about a bazillion years find it refreshing to hear. You Sir....ROCK!!!!

Most (If not all) Gretsches are made in Asia unfortunately. And Fender makes Lots of Guitars in Mexico and not including squier, some in asia.

An excellent review. I still have my 4003 I bought new in 1988. I've considered selling it several times because I like a 5 string, but I've just never been able to part with my Rickenbacker. I can't recommend them highly enough.

This has to be one of the best reviews I've watched for any guitar or bass on youtube. The sound quality was good, transparent tone showing the sound of the bass, the playing was great and easy to listen to yet not show off-y, he covered all of the features, and provided a good commentary. Well done bassemporium!!

I bought this bass about 1 year ago, and this is the best decision I have ever made. Even though the lacquer on the back of the guitar is quite fragile, the sound is unique. I play this bass on this song (with a big muff.... so don't expect a clean sound :P) /watch?v=gOSXcwqR2F4

Brings back memories - I gigged in a band where our bass player played a Ric for 6 yrs. Miss that clarity. You've got a nice sound going on BTW. You can't approach a Ric like you would a P-Bass

absolute myth... a talented funk master can slap and pop a broom with a horse hair. Ofcourse you can slap and pop a rickenbacker and achieve a great sound.
