Alley Theatre here in Houston is doing a production of Jane Eyre, it's a non musical. I really enjoyed it. I've been wondering how I'd feel about Jane Eyre going musical and I must say they've done a very impressive job of it. So much of the story is kept in, plus song and dance, and it's 2.5 hours? Impressive.

As a huge fan of both Jane Eyre and muscial theater, I'm sorry to say this but I found this musical BORING. It's almost like Mr Richards picked put some famous lines from the book and created a musical around those. There was a "rollicking" dance number by the servants preparing the house for Rochester's return with his party guests, and the only inspiring romantic song was the one performed by servants John and Sophie (?!?!?!....NOT in the book!). I found all the other music to be humdrum, like something a Musical Studies student might write as a first year assignment. There were two lines that caused the audience to laugh inappropriately (one was when Jane commented that she was cold after putting out the fire and attempting to depart from Rochester....a moment of exquisite sweetness from the book, when he first realizes he's in love with her). There was very little interaction between Jane and Edward so the proposal came as something of a surprise. Apparently this show was like the Cliff Notes reminder for those fans who just needed a refresher of the general outline of the story, completely missing the emotional depth of the novel (or most successful theatrical productions). I know I've seen some clips from a far more dramatic and emotional Jane Eyre Musical, guess I'll have to see if that is also available on KZbin. This version isn't even mentioned on Wikipedia!

¿ DÓNDE ESTÁ TIMOTHY DALTON Y ZELAH CLARKE? ESTA HISTORIA DE AMOR ENTRE "JANE EYRE" Y EL "SÑR ROCHESTER" NO ES PARA COMO PARA HACER UN MÚSICAL. LO DIGO CON TODOS MÍS RESPETOS PARA LOS ACTORES QUE HACEN ESTA VERSIÓN. PERO TODO NO VALE CADA COSA EN SU LUGAR. ES MÍ OPINIÓN MUY PERSONAL. RESPETANDO LAS DEMÁS OPINIONES, FALTARÍA MÁS. GRACIAS. This is brilliant. Reminds me of a D'Oyly Carte last performance of the season. Pinafore set, pirates costumes and business from most of the others. Dick Deadeye was decidedly effeminate and Ralph Rackstraw was as deformed as I have ever seen. During the curtain calls, the stage crew struck the set until, at the very end, there was nothing of the set left on stage, all the way back to the brick wall.

Jane Eyre is my favorite book and anytime I see a movie, series, or play about it I watch them. I've seen two other musicals, but this one has some amazing songs. The two leads have amazing voices and have given us wonderful versions of the characters. Thank you with all my heart to everyone who performed in this and thank you to whomever posted it! I think I've seen it 12 times in the last two weeks.

Houston's Alley Theatre is currently having a production of Jane Eyre and it was surreal to be sitting in front of a "live action" Jane Eyre. I loved it. I really want to see it again but it's not cheap and that money needs to go towards more important things I have going on. I took my mom, it was great. It was 15 minutes shorter than this play, and non musical but it didn't include near this much of the book, Jane herself narrated throughout the play, let alone songs and dancing, I'm so impressed. The actors for the Alley Theatre productions are amazing. Her passionate outburst during the proposal was breathtaking. First time I felt that she truly did ask him that night, as he told her the next day. If you're close I'd check it out. It's until 5/5/2024.

Kevin Kline was less comic/slapstick and more libidinous. Both he and Jon English were great in their way. I think the choreography in the NY Pirates was better, but the dynamics (choral and orchestral) in "With catlike tread" was superior in the Australian production.

Sorry, but I saw the Shakespeare in the Park version that was later filmed in studio with most of the same cast. It was well done and enjoyable, but EssGee Productions trilogy (Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, and HMS Pinafore) are very well done, indeed.
