I am over 80 years old and have heard a lot of stuff in my life. The greatest football player, the best this, the best that, the goat, blab, blab, blab. None of them could Cary water to Jim Thorpe! Hell, most of them, with tattoos long hair, etc. couldn't even drink with him. It is too bad that time lets the phonies and blowhards get all the praise and the truly great ones get forgotten.

Alcohol abuse and a dwindling (at the time) stature as a writer. went hand in hand with his downward spiral. Booze was a muse and a grim reaper to so many writers and painters.of his and the WWll generations. Even Kerouac's generation. These brilliant, creative figures reduced to rather pathetic drunks. Alcohol is such a shi**y drug to abuse.
