@0:53, Rickles let out a split-second grunt. That was he had already came up with "Fine", and was having a bit of trouble holding it in. But timing his "Fine" response was key to his reply. And he timed it perfectly. He knew exactly when to say "Fine". But he came up with his "Fine" response @0:53, or perhaps a second earlier. Watch him, and you could see he is bubbling over, knowing what's coming, and he is holding it in.

Rickles' humor is usually perceived to be kinda going after the low hanging fruit, but it's much more complicated than that and it requires a keen mind to come up with his stuff.

In the late 90s I asked my parent’s if they wanted to go see Don Rickles. My father immediately refused and said that he didn’t like him nor his material. My mom said yes after I encouraged her. She brought a friend instead of my dad. So it was me with three women counting my wife. As you may know Rickles, he made me the target of a series of jokes because I was at a table of four with three women. He said that I was a “Lesbian that didn’t get the memo”. After the show he came to tell me that I was a good “Sport” and wanted to know why I had “All the girls”. He asked why and I told him about my dad. He asked for me to dial him on my cell. Which I did and my dad didn’t believe him. Then Rickles began to beg my dad to believe him. To this day he doesn’t.

I want this to be true. I do believe and love the idea that if rickles really gave it to you as an audience member he'd come up after and thank you for being a good sport. He made fun of everyone and hated noone

I loved Don Rickles, he was hilarious. I was fortunate enough to see him live before he passed. I was dating an eastern european woman at the time who didn't know who he was. So when she asked about him I told her that he cut up people and without a blink of an eye she said "he's a magician?' I howled, made the moment even better...
