I lived in Baton Rouge about 30 years ago. Violent crime was out of control. The day I moved in I watched the news and there were more murders than elapsed days of the year. Political corruption was the worst I ever saw, before or since. Police weren’t even responding to 911 calls. I personally saw a mausoleum crypt that had been broken into. A child on a school field trip found a syringe on the grounds of the state capitol building. Outside the city limits the parish of East Baton Rouge was a little better but not by much. I was so glad to leave and I have never been back and it is the only place that I lived that I would never return. A true cesspool.

My experiences are often similar - pros, genuinely nice people (arguably the nicest in the US overall) and not the kind of fake Alabama-esq "southern hospitality" that often seems forced or fake. cons, traffic is the worst in the US per capita...it is insane.
