just NO!!!!! shut the fuck up about the goddam keto diet. It issn't going to "cure" something that isn't curable or even a pathology at all! Many who are nonverbal or require support would love to not be ruled by their autism, but pathologizing us is just ableism!!! STOP IT!! Stop using institutional power to do this bullshit!!!

It seems pretty clear that the mindfulness practices described here are not specifically geared towards autism, but they are framed as practices for parents to use on children. At some points the speaker says something like "...your child OR the person with autism," but then they immediately return to specifically talking about what parents can do for their children. This should really be called "Mindfulness for Parents Raising Autistic Children."

I agree with most of this and it makes a great amount of sense. But once she said the word noncompliance was unkind and that they aren’t using it anymore that’s when I saw that agreeableness and neuroticism is going to be a huge issue in this field going forward. I will likely be dealing with colleagues that cannot handle anything that could cause confrontation or conflict. For instance. If you have two people, one of which is responsible for the other (just like a parent is for a child). Then they need that child to be compliant with their expectations as long as they are reasonable. If a child isn’t reasonably compliant then what are we talking about here. The whole purpose of this therapy is to train their behaviors into compliance with particular expectations in mind. Particularly ones that lead to a more stable and reciprocal relationship. It’s possible you can make the word more friendly for people if you called it dismissive behavior instead. But it still sounds like you are saying the same thing to me with extra steps.
@brimusaamv14106 ай бұрын
The neurodivergent community has asked us to stop using that term. Seeking compliance sounds like coercion.

Level 1... Level 3? That is truly the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Whoever came up with that revision was probably the same parent who came up with the lame idea to give every kid a participation award for showing up just so they wouldn't feel bad when they lost.

So this is very similar to the Gaps diet. I am going to do this for a month and see how i feel. I ate onpy raw fruits and veggies and smoothies for 2 weeks and on the 14 or 15th day i had so many bowel movements and a bunch of mucous was in my stool and my stomach was finally completely flat. No distended stomach. I was so amazed and surprised. Thought i was completely healed, so i started eating just meat and veggies ans had no issues. For the first time in a long time My SLEEP was AMAZING! Im used to waking up at least 3 to 4 times in the night. Also constipation and bloating everytime i ate, and signs of on coming depression just b4 a bm. I was soo amazed. Felt so good i started trying to eat like a normal person. So in the morning i made pancakes and baked banana bread since i was only eating eggs, meat, seafood and veggies and i was craving carbs. Everything went to hell from there. I even used healthy ingredients, raw milk, pastured organic eggs, dates and bananas for sweetness and organic sprouted spelt flour and cooked in organic graasfed butter. Tasted soo good and then I coulnt stop eating even past being full, which is something i used to do when i was younger. Id eat until my stomach hurt and then cry to my mom about it. Basically i waa so bloated it was uncomfortable. Temperature went up aa well. Mistake i made was not staying on diet long enough and getting in probiotics. I believe i got rid of all the baddies and got candida in balance, but because i didnt wait long enough to build up the good bacteria that would keep candida and others in check, i went back to square 1. So gonna do scd, because even tho just raw veg and fruits for 2 weeks worked, i felt depleted of energy and lost ALOT of weight. So adding in meats and fish and eggs will be so helpful this time around.

@9:37 it says it all with respect to why the entire basis of ABA is an embarrassing token relic of the past. To paraphrase, "We (ABA) are not concerned with involuntary behaviors, the beating of our heart, lungs and so forth and, therefore, only voluntary behaviors." Really? Is interoceptive (internal) feelings of safety involuntary or voluntary behavior? How about hypervigilance, hyperarousal which shifts physiological state regulation from interoceptive (internal) feelings of safety with others and activates our sympathetic-adrenal nervous system resulting in ADAPTIVE (not maladaptive) fight/flight defensive behaviors or worse if the child is in parasympathetic withdrawal/shutdown and/or dissociation? In other words, these afferent pathways, that is affective signals from the body/autonomic nervous system back into the brain directly affect the so-called, "socially appropriate or inappropriate behaviors." It is a single bi-directional system and thus the infantile description of voluntary vs involuntary no longer apply! So by teaching/reinforcing through BS A, B, C strategies, "Appropriate" vs "Inappropriate" behaviors and cognitive tasks you are essentially and resplendently placing a strait-jacket on the child's entire system and thus laying the foundations for further repression and dissociation (i.e. PTSD). Basically, you have at that juncture (as all behaviorists do) stripped away and flushed down the toilet the child's nervous system or physiological state regulation/organism which exist between the S (timulus) and R(esponse) (which adaptively DETERMINES what you call appropriate/vs inappropriate). Hence, why this is not partly but incontrovertibly and unequivocally criminal and destructive for the last 60 plus years!

Some barriers I've experienced: - Lack of eye contact in an interview caused me to fail the interview, even though otherwise the interviewer said he liked me and I had the right qualifications. - Stress intolerance is not something a lot of bosses understand. They should allow you to take breaks to cry. - Attendance issues caused by sleep problems, which are more my PTSD than autism, but many autistic people also have PTSD due to how many of us have had traumatic, abusive childhoods and tend to be bullied as children at a much higher rate than NT children. Meaning, I was often calling in sick due to mental health or coming in late, which bosses see as "laziness" and "making excuses". - Sensory stuff: I hate humming fluorescent lights, so don't make fun of me for working in a dark room. My screen illuminates itself. I'm fine and do not need you to comment on my lighting choice. For my wife who also is on the spectrum and has sensory problems with other people's chewing, the open-plan office has also been a nightmare. She needs a silent space she can go to where she can get away from the sounds other people make when they eat, and the smells of their food. - Don't force me to socialize, talk to people, explain my back story (PTSD = I HATE having to talk about my past with strangers too) or do "mandatory fun". You can't foist a one-size-fits-all definition of "fun" onto non-neurotypical people!

Please stop talking about ASD, ADHD and other differences in how our brains work, as a developmental disability. It's not a deficiency. It's just another way to be. Start focusing on the "otherness" and ostracism, instead. This type of language is part of the issues we face.

I doubt anyone is monitoring these comments but Autism Speaks is viewed as a hate group by autistic individuals and the fact that this psychologist recommends going through them to find clinics is really disappointing. While it's great that she is pushing for more awareness of autistic adults, she clearly isn't up to date on the preferences or viewpoints of autistic adults.
@afterhoursafv53662 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons why, as an adult, it may be deleterious in the USA to have the diagnosis. Odd how she says that if a client is seeking assistance, the diagnosis is most likely denied just for that reason alone, but if another professional presents the diagnosis in the most pathological way it is then verified and states the diagnosis requires treatment to come to terms with. Basically a way to end up in a facility. Why does a diagnosis require family members to agree that someone has a “disorder “ and is an “identified patient “ ? Why is the diagnosis defined by the way neurotypical people respond to the client? Especially if the client is bullied.

@DocFlamingo... This may be the organization that appears, initially, to support the autistic community, but references resources & cites research that view autism as a disorder that requires a cure, rather than a condition with challenges, some of which can be severe, requiring an extensive variety of treatments & interventions; as well as an ever increasing number of higher functioning individuals, the majority of which have been routinely misdiagnosed &/or are self-diagnosed as adults. Many of the comorbidities suffered by the latter group, that are routinely & erroneously attributed to autism, such as depression, are largely the result of the significant lack of social & environmental supports & accommodations which are needed to meet the challenges & access the opportunities inherent in our disabling, neurotypical society.

Is anyone else bothered by the "severity level" pyramid? (1) should either be on the bottom since it is the lowest support level, or the support levels should be inverted with (1) being the most "severe" and (3) being the least.

ABA is literally like conversion therapy for autistics. ABA tries to force us to confirm to neurotypical standards, it only benefits neurotypicals. Basically just teaches us how to mask our autism which is incredibly harmful (I almost took my own life because of masking my autism for so many years). I can't imagine if I had been in ABA on top of the masking I already taught myself to do. I feel so sad for autistic people who are put in ABA, especially nonverbal autistics who can't verbally describe how they feel about being in ABA.
@IcanSeeMyselfOutThanks3 жыл бұрын
Not at all. It's not "conversion therapy" to reduce a severely disabled individual's eye poking and slamming his head into walls by teaching functional communication. Would you rather the kid exhibit dangerous amounts of SIB, or functionally communicate? If you chose the latter, you are for "conversion therapy"
@Tulsitea123333 жыл бұрын
@@IcanSeeMyselfOutThanks I’m an autistic adult and during meltdowns I do things like punch myself in the face and bite myself and I rather people just let me be when I’m in that state and I instead go in my room to be alone. Intervening just makes it worse and makes me lash out. I’m not saying it’s okay for autistic people to harm others during meltdowns but I’m saying the way ABA deals with it is harmful. Also, there are many ways to help autistic people learn to communicate that don’t involve trying to turn us into neurotypicals (ABA). I’m in autism specialized therapy and my therapist, unlike ABA therapists, helps me to work on communication without trying to make me something I’m not. Teaching us to communicate in itself is not conversion therapy but the way ABA goes about it is because it’s teaching us to get rid of our natural behaviours and instead act neurotypical. They literally force autistic people to stop stimming which regulates us and is part of us.
@IcanSeeMyselfOutThanks3 жыл бұрын
@@Tulsitea12333 sorry, but that is a total misconception of ABA today. It specifically states in the code of ethics that to address a specific behavior for reduction, it has to be harmful to the individual, harmful to others in their environment, harmful to the environment, or prohibits the individual’s learning. Hand flapping or any type of self stimulatory behavior would not be addressed in today’s ABA.

I just went through autism assessment and I'm willing to bet that the psychologist who was interviewing me was going exactly through these points, I did similar tests and she asked me similar questions. This video seems to be geared as educational for such diagnostic psychs, but it's also a good thing to watch if you're going to get assessed and don't know what to expect.
