She was one of the children on board an exploration team in the abyss. The abyss has a curse that prevents creatures from ascending to the surface again giving them ailments that gets worse the deeper you go such as nausea, internal bleeding, extreme numbness that causes you to hurt yourself without realizing it, and full on body horror where you lose your human body and become a blob of flesh.
