Rad looking work you're doing. A Charvel "Sunburn" finish caught my attention and I've been searching for information on the technique. It's a multi-color technique with layers within the grain in the base with other colors on top being predominant. Beautiful looking paint finish imo.

@ManicaroCustomGuitars3 ай бұрын
Yes I sprayed it on and yes it was semi gloss, but that’s is not really important because it’s still need to be sealed with a clear lacquer, either matt, semi gloss or gloss.

Thank you very much for this video. I was looking for a way to increase speed of my CNC and now I know what I need to do. Just need to wait for the dm556 stepper drivers to come, so that I could supply external power to the stepper motors and not be limited to the one that comes from the CNC board I have (24V).

The finish with only the Tru Oil looked better to me than after doing all that he did. Why not just wax the true oil? I've watched several YT videos where a gunstock was finished with Tru Oil, and they came out beautiful without doing anything else to them.
@Oreguns853 ай бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking too. All these videos they buff and sand and it doesn't look any different than when they first applied the tru oil. I've noticed it with my own projects too. All I do is apply a couple coats of tru oil and sand it a little bit to make it extra smooth and do a couple more.

I don’t usually do that, but if I had to, I’ve put a thicker blank and let the machine carve away. I’d probably would have to modify the CNC to have a little bit more travel on the Z axis and rise the neck blank when it’s facing upwards.

I use Tru oil over a shellac finish. It gives durability to the beautiful shellac finish, and is almost acoustically neutral. It’s best to take everything outside the shop when buffing out with steel wool. The fibers will be attracted to your pickups. As for wax, please don’t you use it. It’s great for cars that are left out in the weather, but bad for guitars that sit in cases, most of their lives. Wax will soften the finish.
@ManicaroCustomGuitars Жыл бұрын
Great tip, thanks. Whenever I use steel wool, usually I put a piece of masking tape on the pickups to prevent that. As far for the wax, I wasn’t aware of that, thanks.

Question: I dont have much time to be applying multiple coats a day, it's usually dark when I leave for work and dark when I come back from work, will it mess up the finished product if I can only apply multiple coats on weekends? Or should I try and strive for one coat a day each evening and ramping up the coats on the weekends?

No, it won’t mess up your finished product. I do that to get the guitar done. If you don’t have a deadline for your project, you can apply your coats over the weekend.

Excellent video, buddy. I have a couple questions. I'm trying to do a les Paul swamp ash body like the Gibson voodoo finish. It is essentially the same look as the body you did. 1. How could I have the grains be RED on the black, and 2. is there a way to cover and protect the finish once I'm done, that DOESNT require a spray gun or a lot of technique? 3. I have a maple neck. Should I stain it or paint it to get it to match the black on the body the best? Thank you. I subscribed! :)
@ManicaroCustomGuitars Жыл бұрын
My apology for the late reply, so 1st you can find red filler or try using poster colors. I’ve people using it but I haven’t tried it yet myself. 2 I did put a coat of oil to protect the finish, you can do that or lacquer in a spray can. 3 honestly I love staining a maple neck black, then I go over it with 0000 steel wool to remove the excess stain.

Its all about the wood - and good prep work helps. Thats a beautiful body - both all black, and with the grain fill. It looks like it came off a high dollar guitar.
