I played in a noise band a few times. We brought a dead raccoon once for the audience to enjoy. Perfect aesthetic for the music

@27:29 "i think about the idea of in 15 years looking back and observing where i am... what let to this apocalypse or big world change... to express that emotion in pop music doesnt work anymore. people need something directly tackling that issue." - I am watching this documentary in 2023 for the first time. It was made 15 years ago.

I would argue that the word 'noise' is conceptually problematic as a label for such varied ways of musicking. We, first, perceive noise / non-musical sounds like a musical one (like, 'oh wow, that squeaking door makes a great sound'), then we intentionally organize them for what they become music. So, this is music and not noise anymore. Second, 'noise' mainly reflects how 'normal' music listeners would react to this music, which is ok when the counter-cultural aspect is really strong, but it's not the case for everyone. I know lots of people, like myself, who enjoy the sound-oriented and experiential aesthetics in the first place. Finally, thanks to a conversation we just had with a close friend; 'noise', conceptually, is supposed to be not repeatable with lots of stochastic elements, hence the rate of unpredictability is supposed to be fairly high. However, as much as you label the musical data (in the digital age, particularly) in a certain way, it would influence both the expectation of the listener (streamer?!) and thus the way that music is being made as well, which eventually narrows down the beautifully wide scope of this music, and, moreover, can create other sets of rules than the Western music-theoretical ones. I love all sounds and how we can imagine music with them. Peace!

I see. Do you suggest another name then, out of curiosity? I bet we can get very creative with it. Also, to the outside listener, all of this may sound like horrendous cacophony with no nuance ("noise"), but I think that can be true with any genre. You do make a good point though about narrowing down the scope of this music. There are few rules here, and if any do take hold, that just means the formation of a new genre. There can always be room for pushing boundaries, so we should never let them stop us. Cheers!

the genre isn't very popular. I recommend if you make noise you stick to it being a passion, not something to get income from. doing that is very rare.
