This is acting at its finest in my opinion. This scene is done so perfectly you’d think he was the real Nixon.

Nixon could not have jumped into combat with the 17th Airborne Division in the morning and been back with the 101st that afternoon. And Winters doesn't seem all that concerned that his best friend in the regiment barely escaped death on the jump. It is a really poorly staged scene.

weird choice of keeping the camera on Winters when Nixon says "Yeah, demoted" and switch only when he says "got you". The look on his face as he would receive Winter's question and react to it would have been worth gold

The contrast between Livingston's body language and his smooth and calm tone of speech is remarkable and conveys exactly the inner violence soothed by alcohol but even more, by cynicism and renouncement

Today was the first time I ever watched this scene with subtitles and realized Nix said “not a round” instead of “not around” For 20 years I always thought that line meant he wasn’t present for the fighting because he was a battalion-level intelligence officer.

a lot of people dont understand that the situation will have to be really really bad if the battalian intel officer has to be involved in a firefight right? if he is firing his rifle at the enemy when there was no need to, he would not be doing his job.

You can't ask for a more perfect series in every way than this. Anyone who is chronically exposed to death and dying is easily going to get PTSD. I think like all illnesses there are degrees of it and combat veterans suffer the worst because the death they see is not the placid, 'oh they passed peacefully in the nursing home' but the hideous deformation and destruction of the human body, death from mortars, bullets, IED's etc. But If you find yourself making statements like "oh well, it wasn't me" it is time to go talk to someone.

Just think of the kids… literally kids, that died in Normandy either in the plane, from flak on the way down, in the beach landing crafts or being shot in the water before even reaching the sand. Not that they wanted to die period but years worth of training and preparation to just die before even getting on the ground 😢. RIP the to the greatest soldiers ever

Probably one of my favorite non action scenes in the whole series. There’s no telling how difficult of a situation it is for both Winters and Nixon. Just raw emotion even though neither of their faces show it. All dialogue.

You don't need to fire your weapon in the line of duty in order to acquire combat experience. Nor does a lack of doing so mean you're weak. Survivors guilt and PTSD are very real.

Some people tend to be incredulous over a soldier not ever firing his weapon in combat. Being regimental staff, he’s never needed to. Sink was technically a soldier, but I doubt he fired a shot throughout the entire campaign, it’s just the way it is. Winters was prevented from being in a position to use his weapon the moment he was made up to battalion too.

Oh in the book this what happened prior to this scene...read here⬇️ "In late March Sink had assigned Nixon to jump as an observer with the 17th Airborne Division during Operation Varsity, the assault on the Ruhr, the industrial center that still propelled Germany’s sagging war machine. Nixon was jumpmaster and in the first seat by the door. On March 24, as the plane lumbered over the drop zone, it was hit by flak. Nixon and three others managed to launch themselves out the door before the plane exploded. A day later Nixon was back with the regiment, and while he was drowning the memory with Vat 69, Sink was visiting Winters’ headquarters.“I have a problem, Dick,” he said. “It’s Captain Nixon.”Winters knew what the complaint was, so it came as no surprise.“Goddamit, the man’s drunk all the time,” Sink said. “I mean, I certainly tip a few myself at night and when off duty, but with him it’s all the time. I can’t get any damned work out of him. How did you find him to work with?”“Captain Nixon and I get along very well, sir,” Winters replied.“That’s what I had thought,” Sink said. “Do you want him back? Can you use him?”“Oh yes, I can use him,” Winters said.“You got him,” Sink said. “Hell, every time I need him he’s always here with you anyway. He may as well stay.”So Lewis Nixon, now the only man in the 101st to make three combat jumps, returned to 2nd Battalion."

This scene is interesting for another reason, while people always talk about how Winters is a good leader, Nixon also is one as well. Yeah he might not have fired a weapon but he was a genius with intelligence. Moreover he's more worried about the men he just saw get killed than he is about his own rank.
