original blades had laminated steel, very strong. Super sharp. No fancy skills required. Big sword, hack and slash.

don't get it wrong. keris are created to work differently from swords and knives. and the way keris is not like slicing like a knife or sword. The purpose of the keris is to stab the enemy and the stab center of the keris is in the stomach on the left side of the waist and under the chin, stabbing into the head. keris is created with a crooked crotch to inflict severe wounds on the enemy on the internal organs.

The more curves on a kris, the less likely that it was used in battle and instead owned by a high status person. The straight kris was used in battle by the warrior class.
@iwantyourcookiesnow3 ай бұрын
The allure of Filipino swords is that they were previously owned by real warriors, they may have actually been used in battle, and they are not junk, they are affordable compared t real Japanese katana, they are historical artifacts, and the steel they use comes from the Middle east (folded steel) or from mono-steel Jeep suspension springs. The ones made from Jeep springs are basically indestructible with beefy 1/4" thick hilts. so they can bear more weight than a Cold Steel product.

Part of Arnis is operating against an opponent that is trying to hit your hand with a sword. Because it's jungle sword fighting, you can easily wind up belly to belly to your opponent, and you don't want to have a guard that either snags or pushes the hilt to the blade away from the opponents body. Finally, in the boondocks, it's super common to lose parts of fingers and there is far less of a social stigma against it. My uncles in the Philippines lost fingers by woodworking while drunk or getting a cut on their hand and not disinfecting it in time.

@413MediaGroup7 ай бұрын
@fredbigornia1814 first off we know who Lapulapu was, as indicative in that i actually know how to spell his name. Second we actually interviewed one of the premiere historians of the Philippines that pertains to Lapulapu. But the way you commented about house Lapulapu had a much larger Kapilan, made it sound like you had historical sources. So you telling me to research it just tells me you are just speaking in conjecture.

Definitely not a thrusting weapon. It's more of a beheading people in battle weapon. Kris would be better for thrusting than a kampilan

Very good explanation of parallax! I have to disagree with the stance though. The only way of hitting the hand down below is not just distance but hand guard as well. Guarding the hand from a strike is just as much of seeing the opponents hand as it is your own. An example would be front thrusts to the face which is easy if hand guard is at bellybutton level.

While you can say that the Kampilan can be used two-handedly, it's virtually impossible as the wielder also have a shield called a tameng on his other hand.

question if we were to remove all the dirty stuff in its core is panantukan western boxing?
@mishaaskar3323 Жыл бұрын
...It's literally FMA. It's ancient beyond measure to regular Filipino Martial Arts forms of Wrestling and they have different formats. Us, Igorots and the Ifugaos practiced Dama, Bultong and it's other names ...because it was our empty hand go to once our axe, our shield, our spear and our scythes were out of our hands. As you read...that's ALOT of weapons to go through before you even get to hand to hand . Add that we fight on mountains and you barely get to enter hand to hand with that much resource for any weapon around you. But when we had no choice, we switched to our lifts and throws from Dama and Bultong to floor our opponents so we could kill them with the weapons we could find close by or beat them with a rock. If we were fighting near a terrace, the whole point of Bultong was to lift and throw the person off the ledge. It's is very much FMA...hell, we kept the Spanish off our territories for 400 years. Our culture and combat skills were not tainted by Spanish influence...They couldn't get up the mountain without being hunted, killed and beheaded.

Good points. Just a word of advice, though - calling it an "industry" - while accurate on a certain level - makes it sound kinda cold, and it somewhat goes against the idea of "together-ness". Regarding the topic itself, though, I'm sad to say I see this in my own country as well (Bulgaria). When I was young I remember seeing people from many different schools visiting our FMA seminars. During the 90's my dad says it was even common for people from other martial arts to visit these seminars. Nowadays, we're basically the only ones who visit seminars by different schools and martial arts. I think it's due to the fact that the market has become more mature, and everyone is set into their own little corner. I see a big opportunity in other traditional styles, though. Recently we did a couple of joint seminars with three other schools - two were Karate (Shotokan and Goju-Ryu), and the other was Aikido. So I think it can be done. It's just very difficult and it's easier to do with different styles, rather than with schools of the same style (as unintuitive as that may sound).

The kampilan is versatile af, despite it not being forged to thrust, it can be used with a big ass 5 pronged shield, two handed, dual wielded, or one handed. It also has no single designated scabbard, and is even designed to cleave through the thing.
