I'm looking at leaving from Saco Bound for the two day trip. Where would you recommend camping? Wondering if I should plan on grabbing a sandbar or booking a site at Saco Pines? Looks like an awesome time with the family.

Each time we’ve done it we just pick sandbars. Really fun and relaxing family trip - if you go mid week! The weekends are a bit crazy.

We love them! We bought OG’s last summer before the XG came out. I keep one in my truck for errands and traveling. My son now has an XG. I use that a lot from home - running to the store or visiting restaurants in town. Difficult decision as they’re both great. Which one to choose depends on your intended use. 🤷🏻♂️

That traverse at the start of the 2nd pitch is tricky. In 2001, a 72 year old on a team in front used his wool gloves instead of axes because of the thin ice. Then he died later from a scuba accident. In his obituary it mentioned his Black Dike climb, his Nobel Prize in physics, professor at MIT. He didn't mention the Nobel Prize during our hour conversation waiting for his partner to top out while I was at the top of the first pitch

all nice until you have more of a vertical terrain, then you wont be able to use both hands unless you tether yourself first to the screw? am i right?
@MattyBowman3 ай бұрын
Note how I place a screw, clip a draw, and clip the rope? That’s my protection. At that point I’m protected and can comfortably build my anchor. Yes. This is very mellow terrain, but that’s the process we use for steep terrain as well, after finding a suitable stance and belay position.
@SileDevil3 ай бұрын
@@MattyBowman i doubt that you could stay with both hands free on a a steeper terrain with the rope just cliped to the quickdraw..
@MattyBowman3 ай бұрын
@SileDevil correct, but you could hang from the clip. However, we tend to look for stances. It doesn’t take much. No one likes a completely hanging belay. But that’s why ice climbing is so much fun - to each their own!

Note the screws above: he’s cleaning the route after I lowered off. 🤷🏻♂️
@jamesbarnum35923 ай бұрын
Not questioning. Just asking. I always place the screws staggered since waterfall ice tends crack horizontally. Is that not the case?
@MattyBowman3 ай бұрын
That is correct. I think the video might skew the view a bit, as I don’t recall these being horizontal. That said, they may not be extremely offset. I build anchors strong enough for the scenario: if the climbing is easy and my follower is strong, you’d see a different anchor than if we had the reverse: a climber likely to fall. Does that make sense?

I don't know anything about ice climbing, so I'm curious. Why did you decide against using the initial spot for your gear around the 4:30 mark?
@MattyBowman3 ай бұрын
We look for solid ice, no air pockets, no fractions. Although the initial placement was okay, I noticed a location that looked like it would be even better. Guess I had a bit of tunnel vision, and didn’t inspect the area well enough to begin with. 🤷🏻♂️
