Great interview about a "King of Jazz" musician in the Paul Whiteman orchestra in 1929. How exciting those days must have been, filming that all color talkie! I wonder if Larry got his own new Ford roadster like all the regular band musicians got from the LA car dealer Don Lee?! I know Joe Venuti and Bing got theirs. I once saw a photo of Paul Whiteman next to his new gifted car, which I believe was a big 1929 Lincoln sedan. I also heard that while KOJ story changes were being made on the script, Universal had Whiteman play & record his book of tunes for their film use. After the King of Jazz, a few of these tunes by Whitemans band I assume made it into a film called "What Men Want", starring Ben Lyon and Barbara Kent. ( in one extended wild dance party scene) I have a copy. It's highly possible this trombonist Collins is heard in this talkie also, as he was present for the Universal pre-KOJ recordings of the band that I believe were used in that film!! . I also believe Whitemans band recorded their big 1928 concert work," Metropolis" which Victor also recorded on two 12 inch Victors, and Universal used that song to open the first reel of their first million dollar talkie called "Broadway" late in 1929 starring Glenn Tryon and Myrna Kennedy. It is possible that the films song,"Broadway" was also played by Whiteman on the soundtrack, though on film, you see Gus Arnheims band playing in the niteclub! Also heard is a marvelous modernistic piano solo I believe was done by Whiteman's pianist, Roy Bargy. (who plays the Rhapsody in Blue in the King of Jazz). These are other films that I believe used Paul Whiteman orchestra music besides the King of Jazz! Paul Whiteman arrived at Universal Studio while Director Paul Frejos was converting his silent film of "Broadway" to sound, and needed music for it! Paul Frejos then became the first Director of "King of Jazz", expecting to use the same sets! The miniature Broadway skyscrapers that the chorus girls dance through in King Of Jazz were actually built & used before in the opening reel of "Broadway!" That set was used in both talkies. So Whiteman must have been working intimately with director Frejos to finish up Broadway's soundtrack, during the long delays waiting for a new script format for King of Jazz. Both films appear to have overlapping production schedules at Universal. The film "What Men Want" came later in 1930 and apparently only used left over songs that Whiteman had previously recorded for the "King of Jazz" on Photophone sound film. Thanks for sharing this great interview!

Omg! This has to be the hottest version of this 1929 Broadway show tune I've ever heard! Joyful to listen to the jazz panic this hot band acheives! This is what its all about! JAZz! ❤ I will gladly forgive the vocalist for learning the lyrics wrong. Should be "I can see the way this ENDS". Not "goes!"

Great to hear this old barn burner tune played by Paul Whiteman! Tiger Rag was a favorite closer for dance bands back then. Thanks for the sharing this one of a kind home radio recording from around 1931...?! Grand.

Bless you for sharing this one of a kind home recording off the air. Earliest radio tune I've heard of Paul Whitemans band!! A great listen! Everyone wishes to hear the 1929 Old Gold cigarette sponsored show starring Paul Whiteman, with Bix from New York! I dont think recordings survive of that show at all. Wonderful that this recording has survived from 1931! Thanks for sharing!

Thankyou for this delicious glimpse into the ballroom experience of 1929. A hot dance band with a swell flapper vocalist! A rare treat indeed! Sounds as if it could have been recorded in some big city ballroom full of the dancing public on a typical Saturday night in 1929! Swell disc. I hope you have uploaded more of this hot band! I really like it! 🤩

My husband had a wonderful singing voice and sang many songs. Back in the '40s, his singing would sometimes earn him two loaves of bread. He never had to apologize for anything; among his favorites were this song and Eddie Arnold's "Bouquet of Roses," which he often sang to me...that's the way to win a heart. 💕💞💙💜♾ My beloved passed away this year. We were both great fans of Josephine Baker, and I regret that he didn't get to see this. Perhaps he's met her in heaven.

This is a quite early example of swinging string bass on a dance record. Los Angeles-based band that could outswing most of the similar groups country-wide!

Since the start of COVID, I've been working up ~80% songs 1920s-Elvis, mean 1937, 42 Fats songs. I have 2 subprojects: Fats, and songs w intros. So this will go in both. Has anybody transcribed the lyrics to the intro? If not, I will do so & share.

I’ve been in love with Gershwin’s music since I first heard the Rhapsody in my first year of high school in 1972. A real original; his music is like no one else’s. It’s like Gershwin’s.

This was recorded on an organ that has the capability to play 88 note piano rolls. They worked to play the organ in the way Fats would (in the way they deployed certain stops). This is the hand- played roll recording Fats made for the QRS company.. So this was not originally an organ recording.
