Nice job. How can I see more about the shadowing around the letters? Most videos are about making perfect looking signs using a CNC machine. I am looking for a more hand carved way of doing a sign.
@Paintitupart3 жыл бұрын
I use a flat brush narrower than the brush used for the lettering. I choose a side to shadow left or right and follow the contour of the letter. It helps to visualize a light source. Then just trace along the edge creating the shadow effect. It takes a little practice but you will get it!

Back in the 90s my dad would let me build stuff with his scrap wood. I would make birdhouses, small chairs, yard decor, signs and sell them in my moms yard sales. Well, he would not let me use wood stain because of the strong odor and mess. So he have me craft paint and told me to mix it with water.... several years later, people would come by asking if we had anymore of the chairs or whatever they had previously bought at a yard sale and wanted it stained the same way..my dad had to come get me to figure out what paint colors I used because he only used real stains. I thought it was the kids way to stain...lol now I've been doing it for 25 years! Lol

You're using a chemically treated pressure treated wood for interior application!?! Really a wrong thing to do. Informed individuals are going for VOC paints and stains.
@Paintitupart6 жыл бұрын
This project had plenty of time to outgas before I sanded it well. I use scrap lumber when available and using the term "informed individuals" cracks me up! I HATE using pressure treated but sometimes its all people have on hand.

Some pressure treated lumber is treated with arsenic. Be careful about using it as an outdoor dining surface. Do not inhale dust from sanding. Scrub your skin after handling treated wood.

I'm thinking of doing this with a coffee table! What kind of grey did you use? A warm or cool tone? I love the way yours turned out!
@Paintitupart7 жыл бұрын
Courtney Almodovar. I used black brown and white to create the gray, I blended it as I worked. if you want to create a cool gray just add a touch of cool blue. you really can't mess it up! it can be washed out with water or sanded if you need to adjust the color. remember, paint will dry darker so let it dry to see the true finish.

@Paintitupart8 жыл бұрын
Good luck with your project! Glad it was helpful :-) I love that type of door. Make sure you seal it with a flat or satin waterbased varnish. It will protect it without making it look new. Any oil based sealer will turn yellow so stick with the crystall clear polycrylic type from minwax

hey, I would like to know, the color names you used? I'm working on a Barn and it's about 1000 sqf of wood and would really like this style color stain.
@Paintitupart8 жыл бұрын
sorry! I mixed that color using white black and brown! The key to picking a gray color is to decide if you want to go with a warm gray - more brown or cool gray - more blue in the color.
@jimu578 жыл бұрын
This was great! I was trying everything. I tried steel wool and vinegar. Just didnt do it. Another thing I tried was brushing the wood with a very stiff and rough wire brush. It removes some of the sap wood and leaves raised ridges of the heart wood. Looks REALLY weather when I do that and use this technique of making a gray weathered look. To make a thinner plank, I run wood on edge thru my table saw to cut it into about 5/16" think pieces. Going to use those to make a square and then weather it to make a kitchen clock. Then thinner strips make it a lot lighter. Thanks for your tips.
@Paintitupart8 жыл бұрын
My pleasure! I only had luck with the steel wool and vinegar when it was old wood and the mixture had a day to cure. It can work really nice depending on the type of wood you are working with :-)

You're talented! No sealer or primer before you start?
@Paintitupart8 жыл бұрын
thank you! no, since it is new pressure treated lumber it repels liquids so it is best to sand off as much of the chemical preservatives as possible. I want as much of the wash to soak in as I can get. This is just a general background finish for a mermaid painting I did.

Nice done, was looking for other way's to give the old wood look than vinegar with steel wool. It is also ok, and this is ok too.. :)
@Paintitupart8 жыл бұрын
+safier321 I LOVE the steel wool and vinegar method! one thing I did learn is that it reacts differently for different types of wood. Sometimes when you are using old lumber it turns out really dark and nice. Other times it makes no difference. I found that to be true on newer lumber.
@safier3218 жыл бұрын
+Paint It UpArt That's right, for instance when using it on oak, it turns out really dark indeed, but with pine you will have a nice grey old look. Have a nice day
@frederickodendaal88108 жыл бұрын
I already painted my wood grey, but you can still see the grain. Can I just paint over it with your method?
@Paintitupart8 жыл бұрын
+Fred whatsup Hi Fred! the best way to adjust your finish is to go ahead and sand it off with a course sand paper. Just enough to expose some of the grain and reveal the pattern of the wood. Then go back over it with a wash of black, brown or white according to the look you are going for. you can also go over the exposed wood with wood stain. I would go ahead and sand it and test out a couple of spots on the edges to test it.
