When this came out, it was a monster hit. It was as big a hit as Marvin could hope for. What surprised me was that Marvin played keyboard bass on this. It’s incredibly funky and quirky. Also on this record is Frankie Beverly (percussion) his wife Janis (vocals) and LTD guitarist Johnny McGee on guitar. Also in the studio for the party sounds was the late great Don Cornelius of Soul Train fame. What I also remember was that the song was thoroughly hated by the music magazines of the time because it was considered disco music. I remember being very disappointed and angry while reading the reviews as a teenager. Oh how the worm has turned. It’s now considered a classic. It charted all over the planet. The songs that knocked it off number one were “Gonna Fly Now” another classic and “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder. Great company to be in. All in all this recording is a lesson in groove, funk, vocal layering and rhythm. It was a recording that heavily influenced a young Michael Jackson and the Jacksons and you can hear that in “Shake Your Body Down”. Thank you Marvin for taking the time away from recording “Here My Dear” during December-January 1976-1977 and recording such a fantastic foot stomper released in March 1977. You made so many lives better with this music. Both my parents (especially my dad) absolutely loved this song. I hope you are resting peace brother.

Marvin Gaye was one of the greatest artists. I always felt he was so highly underrated. Mind you, it's just my opinion. I always thought he was so much better than so many artists of today.

I was 17 and loved this, didn't know who Marvin was music wise. After this, loved all the stuff he did. His voice, his funk, his soul, his rhythm, his WORDS and his memory has got to be in every ones life. Miss legendary artists like him.
