One of the biggest week one games in history. The Raider/ Steeler feud at the height of its fury. These games were one step above alley fights.

The game’s famous play occurs around 1:42:10. The color commentator refers to the cutoff man as Dick Green, but it was Bert Campaneris.

Due to an error by the first baseman, Odom had to deal with men on first and third with nobody out in the fifth. He calmly struck out the next three batters.

Both pitchers’ deliveries would cause them to fall off the mound to one side. Odom was nonetheless an outstanding fielder.

Two of the best announcers in the world and they did not get along, which is why it lasted only a year. Woods hated it in St. Louis. I wonder if after Jack's tumultuous experience with Harry, he just preferred working with athletes as opposed to fellow pro announcers. The reverse Red Barber.

Mike Shannon joined the Cardinals broadcast team the following season (1972), and would spend 29 years with Jack, and 50 years total. They even named the KMOX radio booth after Mike.

My dad and I had tickets for the game the night after Rose's streak was broken. We had gotten the tickets weeks earlier, having no idea how close we would be to seeing history. It was such a big deal there were nearly 30-thousand there, even though the Braves were mediocre at the time. And surely some stayed home since the streak was over. Tom Seaver went the distance, giving up solo homers to Murphy and Burroughs and a single that was erased on a double play. So he pitched to two over the minimum. The Braves were six under .500 at the end of the week, but went 16-34 the rest of the way.
