@kylewood4852 🤣🤣 No son, I've been picking a 5-string Scruggs-style since I was 15 (I'm 62 now), so 47 years. Back in my younger-days (for "standard" tuning), I'd use an "A" (440 Hz) tuning-fork, and tune the G-string on the 2nd fret, then all the other strings by ear and fretting. Worked fine. If I didn't have the tuning-fork, I'd just tune by ear, like yer doing. These days, I use a tuning "app" on my cell phone, which works superbly! I've also been dabbling with the bass (guitar) for almost as long as the banjo. I play a Takamini acoustic/electric. So here's the deal: it's just that details matter, and words mean things. But thanks for sharing. God bless & Merry Christmas.
@kylewood485228 күн бұрын
@Calico5string1962 oh sick. 47 years of picking ONE style out of many and yet you still haven’t learned that the D string was called the bass string for years before bluegrass was even a thing? Sir i if your banjo experience is legit then I salute you. But at the end of the day, the only thing you’re doing is being nit picky, that’s it and nothing more. “Sticks and stones break bones but words can never hurt me”. You should know that phrase right? So why do the words “bass string” hurt you? Unless you’re not as old as you say, son 🤣
@Calico5string196228 күн бұрын
"Nit-picky"? Yeah, probably so. But details matter, that's the point I'm making. Does it really matter? No, I guess not. As long as know what yer talking about. It doesn't "hurt me" at all... perhaps, I learned something new (yer never too old, ya know 😊) Literally, honest-to-God, I've simply never heard of the D-string on a banjo called a "bass string".... but maybe I've lived a sheltered life! 🤣 And yeah, I'm really that old... No kidding. My "user name" is my banjo: a custom-built, 5-string Deering, Calico model. I acquired it in 1982, direct from the Deering Banjo Company shop (in southern California). Greg Deering personally took my order. Not many can claim that! LOL Anyway, take care my friend...

@@kylewood4852 Dude, tell me about it. It's tricky right now cause I've had no problem learning stuff by ear (namely guitar and harmonica) but since it's a new instrument, figuring out the nuts and bolts of UDM has been a real doozy LOL, and there's certain songs of his I REALLY want to play in particular. Is there a particular process you have?
@kylewood48524 ай бұрын
@@mixmastercj100 I wish I had a solid process but since 2017 all I did was keep the banjo by my side and play it every bit of free time I had (even in a coffee stand drive thru lines) until things started to click. I'd say study all the chords you can in standard tuning, Two-finger C tuning and Sawmill tuning then listen to old recordings and try making out the chords and hand placements. To be honest, in the beginning all I did was study David Akmen (Stringbean) a bunch and just get used to swifty chord progression. Lastly you might try singing the song out as it can help you pick it out sometimes. Just curious, what's one of the UDM tunes you'd like to learn?
