Im a purple belt and got anterior hip replacement 1.5 years ago. My hip is great now and i have no restrictions. If i am rolling 1. Only roll with people you trust and are familiar with. 2 If you end up in a situation that you dont know the outcome just tap and re start.3 Do not roll with white belts ( because they spaz) and 3 stay with people your size or smaller.

Hello, Honu BJJ Reno.. We feel very proud to be added to your KZbin channel. We have been auditing many KZbin channels before but never found a KZbin channel like yours anywhere before. Just like your KZbin channel, your content and videos are of high quality. The audience that visits your KZbin channel will be impressed with your KZbin channel. But I noticed one thing on your KZbin channel. Your KZbin channel has 688+ subscribers and 101+ uploaded videos. But you haven't used your video related thumbnails, titles and descriptions in your KZbin channel videos. That's why your youtube channel video views are low, if you solve these problems then your channel will get organic video views and you can get organic subscribers in your channel. Have a nice day, Thank you.

I haven't had any issues with closed guard or traingles, two things I enjoy immensely. I avoid hard takedowns and leglocks, but other than that I feel pretty normal. The hip is way more mobile than it was before surgery. I've always had hip mobility issues (the other hip needs replacing too), but now I have no issues at all.

I did a lot of research before deciding on the surgery. As far as I know there is no other solution to severe arthritis. I was initially worried just because it is so permanent. But I learned that issues are rare and I was tired of the constant pain. I have zero pain now and teach and train 4 days/week. I highly recommend getting it done earlier rather than later so you can start enjoying a pain free life.

In my experience not really. Flexible people sometimes reach for the head with the legs, and that can turn into an arm bar or triangle. I lean toward more fundamental approaches that are reliable and effective for most people.

Thank you for the post, I am life long martial artist about to go in for the left hip replacement also and within last month the right hip has begun its 1-2yr decline so like you, its next. Spending a life rolling and sparring, having this video to give some idea of what will be possible to continue with is great. As all of us in the world of martial arts know, the idea of not being able to actively train is a very depressing thought. One question I would have, do you feel any limitations in movement or how much you can post or rotate on that hip? or does it just pretty much feel like your original hip before the decline of the socket?

Hi Ben…really appreciate you posting these vids. I’m 63, a martial artist for 50 years, and a BJJ Brown Belt. I am 13 weeks out from hip replacement surgery and due for a consultants review in 7 weeks. In the interim I am working with my physio and her major concern is internal rotation and dislocation so she wants my consultant to sign off on light rolling before I do so. I just wondered if you have felt any undue pain or stiffness from something like a pressure guard pass (and the associated internal rotation) even with a partner who is being cautious for you? Many thanks and all the very best on your journey.

It took me a while to get back to you so I think you're about to get your new hip. The only real discomfort I've had is when they put a lot of pressure on the front of my hip like when they're on my back. It pinches the muscle against the prosthesis and its uncomfortable. I get some soreness and swelling if I work hard, but I don't feel like I have to avoid anything. I generally don't resist pressure passes too much. I tend to flow more now and play a pretty defensive based game. I also avoid footlocks and takedowns. I have a bad right shoulder and my other hip will need replacing within a few years. I have had to come to term that my rolling can't be as hard as I used to enjoy. I'm honestly just happy being on the mat.

Greetings. Good stuff here. After abusing my body for 51 years, I'm getting total hip replacement in February. I'm 64 years old and a blue belt addicted to BJJ. I see, you're not rolling yet. Do you see yourself doing hard rolls in the future or are those days over? I want to heal, and get back ASAP to include hard rolls. Your thoughts?

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I hope your recovery is going well. I actually started rolling very lightly after 5 weeks. After 2 months I was pretty much back to normal. However, that normal is different than it used to be because I had shoulder surgery (rotator cuff and bicep tendon) a few years back and have really bad arthritis in that shoulder. Also, my other hip is getting close to needing replacement. So for me now rolling hard just isn't worth it. It has been tough mentally letting go of that, but I'm getting used to being happy to be on the mat.

Can you please share, what else you are able to include in your training regimen either at the 3 month point of this video or in the next one? I appreciate the feedback. As I've stated, my main motivation for posting these videos is to help people like you to know what to expect from THR surgery and how to make it back to the mats. I actually started rolling lightly at 5 weeks, which seems crazy. That was on the advice of my physical therapist, and I was very careful. I feel like I was back to like 90% by about 2 1/2 months. I'm at 4 1/2 months and I've had literally no issues with the hip. I did pretty aggressive PT, and I believe icing has been key to a quick recovery. I got a Breg Polar wave machine with the hip attachment so I could ice for several hours/day. The PT regimen was incredibly simple, and I'm still doing it on my own at the gym. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery and recovery. I am always open to talking about my experience and listening as well. Just let me know and we can get contact info.

I was back on the mats training and drilling 2 months post surgery. I started light rolling at 3 months post. I am now 9 months post, back to rolling 95-100%. I am still very careful with takedowns, most of the time I will pull guard just to avoid a heavy fall on that hip, but my range of motion, is SOOOO much better than before surgery, doing triangles, sweeps etc and I feel like a new man.

I have had psoas issues in the past, and I suspect they were related to the arthritis--compensating and putting too much strain on it. I haven't had any of those issues since surgery. I did look up some stretches and exercises that helped a lot. From what I learned the psoas gets irritated when it has to take on too much of the load, so the idea is to retrain the body to put the stress on the right muscles. There are some great videos on that if you do a little searching. The best stretch I found was lying face down with my shins against a wall. But if it is already irritated you'll probably have to see a physical therapist to get it under control. I'm lucky because my therapist is a purple belt at my gym and I can talk to him all the time. He did tell me that a common thing that happens is putting too much strain on the hip flexors too soon after surgery before they are ready to take on the burden. He advised me to wait at least 6 weeks, which I did and had no issues. I hope you're able to get it worked out. Hip flexor pain is miserable.

I feel way better than I did before surgery. Both my surgeon and my physical therapist (a purple belt at me gym) have said I have no limitations. My challenge is that my other hip is also needing surgery in the near future and I had a major shoulder surgery 2 years ago and lasting pain from arthritis in that shoulder. Because of those two injuries, I am pretty limited in how I do jiu jitsu in general. Its not that I feel like I can't do certain things when I'm rolling, but I pay for it later if I go too hard (soreness and swelling). I have to manage how I roll and with whom (no more competing with young giant monsters). That said, I'm just happy to be able to be on the mat. With that mindset, I don't feel like my surgically repaired hip limits me at all. I hope that answered your question.
